The Slimer Build Thread

Gents, I need a Warn winch, 9k-10k. Anyone have one for sale?

Skid,
The dealer installed the lift and mentioned that the sway bar end links in the front were too short and he didn't want the sway bar flipping under and getting stuck. So he swapped the fronts with the rears and that solved the problem!

Thanks! I will look into that when I order mine.

Looking to buy a new Warn winch. The gear ratio and weight spec are the same for the VR10000 and the Zeon 10k. The specs are pretty much the same on the Warn site. Can someone explain why the Zeon is about $350 more? Is it because it looks nicer and is their new model? Sell me on the Zeon... Go!

Will the Zeon Winch fit in an EVO 1/4 Pounder? I've looked at these same options and can't come up with a definitive answer...

I asked Chris at EVO and he said that sometimes the PowerPlant requires some minor trimming, but otherwise all Warns will fit. As Zeon is new, it might be worth asking about it specifically, or you can just go to the warn specs and get the dimensions and see if there are any other winches of similar dimensions, since he said they all fit.

Like Prime8 posted, I had to trim to get my PowerPlant to fit. It was minor, so I actually sanded down the front corner of the winche's black cover (below where the controller plugs in). The cover/case on the PowerPlant is aluminum, but some people actually trim the bumper. I did ask Mel at Off Road Evolution a while back and he said Warn made sure to make the Zeon dimensions the same as other Warn winches because if it wasn't, all the bumpers made by all the manufacturers, for all the different vehicle would have to be redesigned to fit just the new Zeon. Jeeps are probably the easiest vehicle for winch and bumper manufacturers to build for compared to other vehicles.

Thanks Greg. What's your input on which winch I should get? VR10000 or Zeon 10k. Keep in mind I will only be using it about 10-15 days a year (especially hope to use it at JKX this year!). Is it worth paying the extra ~$350 for the Zeon for that little use? I'm really torn because I like to put nice stuff on my rig, but with a cage, cb, and other optional stuff to buy before this summer, I'm wondering if I really need the Zeon... Any winch advice from you would be greatly appreciated, even of its not one of these two models.

Honestly, since both choices are a Warn you aren't going to go wrong, but since you are looking at other mods too I would just save the extra coin and go with the less expensive one of the two. I like nice stuff too, but either winch is still going to be one of the best currently out there and you can't even see them when they are installed between the frame rails :thumb:

Sounds good. Do you know the difference between the two? The specs on the Warn site aren't really different... Load capacity and gearing are the same, but they don't list the line speed. Is that going to be a major issue? Also, I read the entry level VR series are made in china... Know anything about that?

Prime, I have no experience with either of those Warn winches, I just believe in the brand. Unfortunately, about everything in our world of 4x4's, other than EVO, Dynatrac, and J.E., Reel is probably produced in China. Sad but true  Warn has a pretty good warranty on all of their products so I would not think reliability or replacement isn't an issue. Maybe Eddie or ChrisB or one of our other brain trust here will chime in for you :cheesy:

I use the 9.5ti warn and have had no issues with it. I would not get the expensive winch unless it was the power plant

Agreed.

You can't go wrong with Warn. I have the Warn cti-s. If you don't have onboard air already, I'd just go with the power plant and be done with it.

So, I can get the Zeon 10k for $900 and the ARB compressor for $250, or spend $1600 on the PowerPlant? That doesn't seem like a good investment...

Sorry, I didn't realize saving $400* was your priority on your $40K+ jeep build.

Therefore, I'll offer the following free of charge. :cheesy:

I have an ARB compressor and do not have the PowerPlant, but I wish I did. The PowerPlant fills tires faster than the single ARB compressor, I also find it annoying to take time to open up the hood every time I want to use the compressor (on the trail and other places), sometimes it is hot as hell in the engine compartment when you are done wheeling and especially after airing up (the compressor gets very hot)...IMHO it would be much nicer to just plug into your compressor outside of your jeep. Plus, I'm not sure the price comparison is exactly comparable because I do not know that the performance of the Zeon and the PowerPlant are the same...I haven't researched it...because I don't care.

But if you want to save even more money, go by a Smittybuilt winch. I have friends that run them, have winched several vehicles with them, and they worked great! :thumb:

*I added $50 for the ARB compressor mount you'll need, but not the additional time and supplies needed to wire it up. :thumb:
