The building of Bison

I couldn’t be happier, especially after today and letting it stretch its legs with goose and Jeep on it. It really smoothed out the ride and that was with only about 11k behind it. With the 3500 High Output Cummins and Aisan Transmission the towing capacity for that rig is 24,500 Lbs, that’s just crazy to me on a SRW. I turned 10k on it today, so I hope to have another 30k on these tires. But I am blown away by how well it pulled and how comfortable the ride was.

Nice, I've only towed about 5k but it sure rode better lol. I have the same combo, and rear air suspension, and it barely registered the weight. Great truck

exactly..I'm at 20k now, got 5 maybe 10k left. I'd be surprised if I get more than 5 though. So by end of the summer it'll be time

That’s what my Ram did, then it ate a set of Michelin’s in 40,000 miles. My GMC has 43000 on the original Good Years with tread left. Heck we got almost 80,000 on the original Good Years on our Grand Cherokee

I got over 60K on the original tires on my F-350

My Ford's in general get 60 to 80K on factory tires.

All the Dodge/Ram trucks I have ever owned needed tires by 30 to 40K.

More BS as far as I'm concerned.

Don't know about GM, the last one I had was my 04 Avalanche, and I lifted it and put 35s on it when it had 6K, but the tires it had were the same Firestones as my Ford that went 80K.

It seems to me FCA puts the cheapest POS tires it can find on.

The Cummins brings on all that tourqe at such a low RPM compared to the Fords and GMs, certainly different philosophies on this but I'd imagine Its in part why the Rams chew em up faster. Either way I've just excepted it, but I do drive about 25-30k miles a year, so buying tires is part of life lol

The rig is looking great, Bill! Sounds like the new Ram is an extremely capable machine!

On the topic of tires, for comparison I got 80k on the original set of BFG AT’s on my ‘05 F250. 2nd set were ruined by seized front shocks and now on a set of Coopers. Too early to tell about life but so far so good!

That’s I really nice rig, Bill. I’m blown away how far these trucks have come, as far as towing capacity. The weight ratings have really increased this last model year.

Thanks Jeff, it is really crazy how far they’ve come and how comfortable they’ve become as well.

I did swap the factory tires for a set of Ridge Grapplers before it left the dealership. I’ll keep everyone posted on how they handle the miles. They’ve got 10k on them now with little sign of wear.

Bill,

Ty for all the info on RAM you posted over time I read all of it and did my own research on such trucks including dual rear wheels once. So two nights ago my friend called he is plumber and relocating his plumbing business from NYC to Tampa FL area and it also includes dumpsters business so he needed a dual rear wheel truck with substantial towing capacity for the dumpsters part as well as his boats ( he changes them frequently so to have extra towing capacity is a must) so his brother pushing him towards Ford but then I asked him to look at the RAM and we built a truck online together so he is going to try one out tomorrow. Long Horn Megacab
Let’s see if he gets it

That’s awesome! I am by no means an expert like the guys that use them to tow for a living, but from what I’ve experienced they are a beast of a truck in every way. I love the extra room for storage the Megacab offers and that back seat is massive if you have a bunch of guys in the truck. Couldn’t be happier.

What tires do you run?

It's still on the 285 firestones that came from the factory, trying to decide what do next as I like the look of a bit bigger tire and more aggressive but plan to keep factory wheels and not sure yet how it'll all fit together, with certain sizes, ect (need to research still). But also don't want something that will melt off with in a year if I can help it.

I’m running 295 Nitto ridge grapplers on the stock wheels. They were one of the few AT tires with a higher load rating than the stock Firestone’s. At full lock, they will rub a bit on on the sway bar. Also, the spare took some massaging to get to fit up in there. I still have a bit more to go to get it perfectly flat.

Could you let the air out to get it in place then pump it up?

Thanks for the info on that, I was thinking 295 or a 305- which sounds like it may be to wide. Maybe I'll just stay with the 285s this time around too and revaluate next year lol

With Covid slowing down the availability of the Accutune Coilovers, I decided to push forward on at least getting the Fox IPF bumps installed front and rear. I was hoping the fronts would have been here in time for the Drummond run this weekend, built only the rears came in today.
