The building of Bison

What kind of fluid do you use. I heard a rumor that you shouldn’t use synthetic. I have a hard time finding conventional oil. Have you heard the same? I think it was hard on the seals on the arb.

I read the same thing on ARBs website. I just get mine from NAPA.

A limited slip differential has small clutch discs inside the carrier and the fluid type has to have a friction modifier additive to make them work properly and not wear out pre-maturely.

Makes sense.

I've been using Lucas conventional gear oil for a long time. It's $8.99/qt on Amazon. Local parts stores carry it as well which is handy.01-80W-90GearOil_800x950.jpg

Going thru Amsoil’s website, I came across this:

AMSOIL SEVERE GEAR is compatible with most limited-slip differentials. For applications that require additional limited-slip friction modifier, add AMSOIL Slip Lock[emoji768].

Is that the additive that ARB is warning against?

What is a limited slip additive? Going thru Amsoil’s website, it doesn’t say it uses additives and is it formulated to protect seals. I don’t know.

What brand do you run in yours?

Last I knew Napa oil was made by Valvoline.

Careful ordering from Amazon right now. Ask me why I have 12 quarts of the wrong fluid sitting in my garage that need to be returned. Apparently the primary listing is mixing up their orders, repeatedly, after telling them they are sending the wrong stuff. Advanced Auto sells it which is what I did.

Thanks for the tip. I have a stock on my shelf for now. Advanced Auto is my first stop and if they're out I use Amazon.

Well, both rear UCAs are seized. I need to push the rear axle back about 1/2” to clear the sliders.

I didn’t break the torch out, but pb blaster and the 24” crescent didn’t budge them.
