TeraFlex Hinged Tire Carrier Break

Matter of time.

I have the tire carrier, and it shakes when I hit a bump with Toyo 37" MT's. Looks like it is just a matter if time before breaking. I will break out the mig and weld on a gusset to at least try to reinforce the area. Seems like putting a bandaid on an ax wound, though.

I really wish I had done more research prior to purchasing so much junk already. I just joined the forum, read the posts, and find myself filled with buyers remorse. Thanks for the info, guys.

Toyo is a super heavy tire, so that doesn't help.
I would throw a cable and padlock on it.. Keeps your tire from bouncing down the road and killing someone if it breaks.


My ride- 2001 power wheel, 11" plastic tires, upgraded battery, boat sides, custom bumpers, tow hooks, new paint.
 
Make sure you have it sucked tight up against the tailgate too. I had this tire carrier before i knew the issues. I have 37" toyo on mine and it doesn't move a bit. I have the carrier slid in the whole way. When i tighten the spare lugs the tire is pulled very tight against carrier and the factory rubber plug. I check it often, so far is holding up. Eventually I'll replace the thing.

Thanks for the suggestions. It is definitely a heavy tire. I have it tucked in pretty tight, but I'll try your suggestions. I need practice welding so I may add a gusset or 2, too like the Teraflex pic with the 42s. Maybe it will buy me some time. But then again, if the carrier breaks because of cheap steel, then I'm not sure what can be done. Thanks again.

Oh and the BEST part was TF response.

It MUST be install/ user error, no WAY it could be the crappy Chinese welds or quality control!

This past weekend I saw an offroad shop's 'show vehicle' with a 40 on a TF carrier. :eek:

I appreciate Eddie and this forum providing information to help all of us make better decisions. Doesn't seem like he should be attacked for simply offering honest observations that may be of interest to the Jeep community. I believe the idea here is to give each other the benefit of our experiences. No motives other than to help each other out and possibly prevent someone else from repeating the same mistakes or sharing info on positive results that may be useful.

I was in line for one of these and am grateful that I was able to see some of the issues and go another direction.

I can only see one of the 3 pics you posted and I have to say that I'm surprised to see that the tear is happening on bracket that is bolted to the tailgate. In the past all the breaks have been occurring on the tire mount. You simply cannot make this stuff up and I can't believe there are people out there who will still defend TeraFlex, in spite of the fact that they try to hide the truth and hate on me for showing it. :naw:

Well TF is defending their carrier and saying that they had issues with their "older style." What I see here is a NEW issue that needs to be addressed. Am I wrong here?

I'm sorry but I have NO faith in TF products anymore based on what I've seen with these carriers AND their long arm control arm mounts. :grayno:
 
Okay, I just had a friend send me all the pics of the new TeraFlex HD tire carrier break and again, all I can say is that you simply cannot make this stuff up.

As you can see, the steel on this tire carrier is literally tearing away. People are really paying $700 for this?? :naw:

Nope, you're absolutely right, this is a totally NEW break we're seeing and NOT related to what we have seen plenty of breaks on in the past to the tire mount.

:grayno: I saw that too. This is not a problem with the welds. Like you said, a new issue of the material basically ripping apart.

Add gussets here bring out a weak spot there, is it bad design, crap welds or inferior metal. Either way this product has had nothing but issues from what I've seen.

Agreed. But, as Frank pointed out, TeraFlex is still blaming the user and install error for these breaks. :naw:
