Mail Call - 1975 Jeep DJ5

Looks like a fun project

One of the guys in our camp at KOH last year showed up with this little mail jeep, it looks a year or two newer though...

I’m not sure why people remove lines from a carb. It’s there for a reason. When I picked up the FC nothing was hooked up and it ran like shit.

Depending on the year, most of it is for emissions crap and if you have just one vacuum line leaking, your engine will run like shit. Of course, tracking down a leak on miles and miles of vacuum lines can be near impossible at times. If you remove the emissions crap and cap off most of the ports, you'll have a engine that runs nicely.

This...

Thematic air cleaners, EGR's, PCV's, and charcoal evap canisters are all emissions equipment and not needed (in pre '75 vehicles in California)

Mine was not emissions lines, it was vac lines for the carb to work properly, same way with the line to the exhaust manifold, it helps with cold starts.

Like I said, depending on the year. Safe to assume one of the lines was going to your timing advance?

As long as the vehicle starts, the air heats up quickly and pumps through that hose into the air cleaner. Inside that air cleaner is a metal door that opens allowing the hot air in. Once the engine reaches a good temp, the door closes and no longer needs the hot air and rather just sucks ambient air from outside through that snorkel opening. I'll try to find a diagram. Just like a lawnmower runs like shit when it's cold out, this feature helps the engine run well faster and sooner. Hot air atomizes fuel way faster than cold air.

Great find on the diagrams

Were you able to get Tina behind the wheel over the weekend? Looks like a fun project and not too over the top as you stated. [emoji106]

No she didn’t. She’s scared of the 45 year old brakes. Lol

Got new ball joints, radiator hoses, gas tank cap and that heater hose ordered today. Tried picking up some bearings and seals for the front end but there were two part numbers so I need to pull it to see which it is. I’ll pick those up tomorrow.

Started pulling things apart. Shocks, tie rod, drum, and in the process of taking the knuckle off. The castle nut on the ball joint is way bigger than I thought. Think I have to order a new socket for it. 1 1/4” isn’t enough.

Brakes as old as me. Nothing to fear.

Where are you finding all the parts for a ‘75?

Summit racing and Napa have most of them. From what I’m seeing a lot of parts are the same as the CJ. The harder to find parts (replacement floorboards and DJ specific panels and things) there is a company is Alabama that has them.

What a pussy, he has a dual master. He’ll be fine. I drove my M38A1 around with no brakes and it already killed a guy.

Grow a pair...
