I got the engine oil for $6/qt at Autozone (cheaper than the case price I fould online). but they want 25 for Dif, adn didn't carry the trans. I found the trans at another retailer byt they wanted $22 a qt for the trans!!?!!

When should I get my diff fluid changed? My '13 has about 12,500 miles or so and I'm about to put another 1,500 plus on it this next week.

I'm not a mechanic, so take what I say with a grain of salt. But if it were up to me, I'd suggest that the diff fluid be changed out with the first oil change on the new JK's. So around 7,500-10,000 miles or whenever your service indicator lights up. After that, follow the recommended maintenance schedule or more often if you spend a lot of time in the mud or water.

Also, you can save a bunch of money if you change it yourself. It's not hard and you don't need a lift or any special tools just to drain it and then refil. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions as to how it's done.

Not to over step KP but I was told by my dealer that diffs and transfer case should be done around 30,000 miles. They gave me a good price of $250 for the services.

You would do just fine following the 30k rule. But that first flush is going to contain all the extra break-in gunk and be extra foul imho. If you have the skill set to do your own flush (I do) and the only cost is fresh fluid & your time, I would do it. :twocents:

Yep agree doing it yourself would be the better choice due to cost. I was just giving him another option. And it's not like it's new gears so why would there be extra gunk?

Good price Steve? I'll tell you what... bring it to my house and I'll do it for $200 in half the time. 30k? Really? After wheeling and water crossing. When they void your warranty on your diffs because of water infiltration you'll wish you did it at 15k

Compared to other quotes I got for flushes it was good.

I'm new to services like this so sorry if I came off like I was arguing in my original post. My old car was a piece of shit so all I ever did was oil changes and one coolant flush.

Also not so sound mean but my dealer is VERY mod friendly. They work closely with Quadratec so they understand all the moding. Plus I just had my gears redone so no water would be in my diffs anyway so they couldn't void me for water in there

Thanks guys, sounds like I should be doing it soon. Maybe when I get to 15,000 I'll for sure do it with my friend (a former Chrysler tech). Thanks for the help fellas.

*Edit: oh and I don't intentionally spend a lot of time in mud and water so I'm not too worried about that but would definitely rather do it sooner than later. I also need to get an alignment done again and a rotation next oil change.

At the moment there is no water because they just did your gears, a few RC water crossings in cold weather and that could change. There is no downside to changing diff fluids at 15k and you will be surprised at the amount of metal you find stuck to your magnet. And like I said, $250? I'll do you one better... I'll come to.your house and change your diff and tcase fluid for $200.

Here's an fyi for you guys... when you're wheeling in the middle of winter and go through that axle deep ice strewn puddle, the air and fluid in your diffs contract rapidly, causing a vacuum effect. This vacuum will pull air in through the breather valve as well as through the seals in the axle tubes. If your axles or breather valve is under water guess what? Water in your diff.

Following "Schedule B" in the Jeep owner manual (heavy driving), I change my differential fluids every 15,000 miles. However, It’s always a good idea to do this as IF you've submerged your axles in deep water for prolonged periods of time. Below is a list of what you will need and instructions on how to service yourself differentials on a Jeep JK Wrangler Dana 30 or Dana 44 axle. Guess where I got that.:D

Gear oil does not need to changed that often and yes 30k miles is fine , and I bet most of u with manuals don't realize u have to change ur tranny gear oil as well but doing it any sooner then 30k miles ur really just waiting money on fluid. The fluid should be black and nasty that's totally normal but as soon as u feel metal shavings on the drain plug then u have problems

I don't always wheel , but when I do I keep it tight......... Stay dirty my friends.

And KP that diff cover looks bad ass

And now back to KP's regularly scheduled build thread.

Not trying to be an ass...I just want KP to put more stuff on his Jeep so I can see if it works or not...

Are you kidding me? Black and nasty? You know what that black and nasty shit is? Its metal in your fluid. Feel metal shavings on the magnet? Its a little late at that point. 30k? How do you know if you've been driving around for 20k with contaminated fluid in your gears? Sorry, $20 and 15mins of my time is worth the extra insurance of not blowing up my gears 5 miles out on the trail, or 200miles from home. Unbelievable advice on this forum.
