KOH 2013 Video and Picture Thread

I've ridden in coilovered rigs and they ride nice. For me tuned Fox resis are good enough.

LOL!! Allow me to clarify - there is a difference between a rig running coil overs and a rig running coil overs that have spring rates and are valved specifically for it. Still, if you're tuned Fox reservoir shocks are good enough for you, more power to you. :yup:

The Savvy LJ hauls some serious ass. I don't think coilovers would make it any faster.

You can think that if it helps you to sleep better at night but, I don't think any of the Ultra 4 racers would agree with you - nor would I for that matter.

Hell, last year he was the first to finish running stock class beating all the big boys in mod class.

:rolleyes2: Okay, first off, Savvy did a great job last year and my hat is off to them for winning it. They built a good rig that held it together and John Currie is a good driver. So that it's clear, this year, they came in a whole 8 min AFTER Jim Marsden. Unfortunately for him, he was DQ'ed and so Savvy won by default - not exactly the glorious win you seem to want to make it out to be. Of course, EVO DNF'd due to a bad alternator on lap 1 and, maybe it's just me but, that's hardly an inditement of their suspension.

Why wouldn't the winner of what the EMC winner runs gauge what I should run? I know a lot of people here run EVO stuff because Mel runs it at the hammers, It's the same thing. I know the products that Savvy puts out as I run them myself and they are the best in the industry for the TJ.

Oh please :rolleyes2: Unlike you, I don't need to rely on what other people run at the Hammers or have even won races with because I have personally run a myriad of suspension components and ONLY run EVO coil overs now because they are in fact, FAR superior to anything else I have run to date. My Jeep, as is, cannot even run the EMC because Dave Cole has stated that "it's too fast". If I wanted to run my Jeep at KoH, it would have to be in the Ultra 4 class based on their rules.

Look, clearly you're a Savvy fanboy and really, that's great. However, you're only purpose for posting up on this thread is to try and make yourself feel better by putting down products that you clearly have no real experience with, perhaps you signed up on the wrong forum.

MoabRubi. Once you drive and or ride in a rig with EVO coilovers you will definitely know the difference. Please do yourself a favor and do some actual testing before discounting a product. I have driven and ridden in rigs with all different kinds of suspensions.

EVO coilovers are far superior to anything I have personally experienced. Driving hard and fast they are very smooth and responsive. Slow road and moderate freeway driving they handle like a Cadillac.

Great Pictures thanks for posting!! I haven't seen a KoH since I was in the Marines it was great to see some video and pics! EVO FTW!

As mentioned, they are not coil overs. The coils and shocks are attached to the frame separately.

Not true at all. Mel got confirmation from Dave Cole that they would be okay to use as they still follow the guidelines of the coils and shocks being mounted to the frame separately. Coil overs would have the coils attached to the shocks and that would give you an advantage.

Copy that. I was trying to remember what Greg was saying about what the TJ was running. I couldn't remember why he said they were okay. Thanks for the clarification!

Dang, this thread went sour!

The suspension set up on the TJ we raced is easy to misunderstand if you are not directly standing next to it as one of us walked you through it. But they truly were not coilovers, as stated earlier, they were a non-bypass, external reservoir, traditional smooth body King shock bolted into stock mounting points. However, instead of having a traditional coil perched next to the shock in coil buckets, Off Road Evolution just slipped the coil over the smooth body shock and tied it into separate mounts on top and bottom. Nothing illegal by the rule book, it might make you scratch your head like the tech guys did in inspection, but even those guys thought it was cool and most importantly legal.

Lastly, it would be easy for me to write that "had we not broken we would have had a podium finish" but that is an unknown. What is a known fact is that in the open desert sections, no one could stay with us and that was all suspension. Still, a DNF is not something to brag about. Bottom line we broke ;)

Congrats to Savvy Racing, they won a race that claimed virtually every race car in the class and that is badass! Awesome job!

How about I bring this back on topic with Kirby Racing taking the same line as Mel and giving it hell while they snapped an axle. (You can see the front wheel is where they snapped)

You sure are a testy one. I guess technical discussions aren't for you.

I guess I could say its obvious YOU have never ridden in the Savvy LJ. Of course coilovers are better for the guys running big travel, but for the Savvy car springs and shocks work just fine as proven with 2 consecutive wins.

Marsden was using sticky tires and full hydro. If you are going to try to tell me that is not a huge advantage then you are crazy. I'm sure if it was EVO you would have no problem defending him. I never said that coilovers sucked big monkey balls and spring and shock was the only way to go. I just said that spring and shock can work as good as a coilover on a Jeep running ~12" of travel. And guess what? That's been proven.

Well clearly you are an EVO fanboy who can't admit other people build better cars then EVO. I came up on this thread because I was interested in why he was running coilovers in stock class. That was it.

Great pictures and story's. Thanks.
Looked like it was a good time, sorry I missed it.

Greg now you've found a whole new addiction to feed, very cool!!

:cheesy: Good morning to you too.

Funny, I don't ever recall say that the Savvy's rig didn't run well or that their springs and shocks didn't work just fine. :naw:

Marsden was using sticky tires and full hydro. If you are going to try to tell me that is not a huge advantage then you are crazy.

Funny, I don't recall saying that either - just pointed out that they still came in 2nd. But, now that you mention it, I do think that a "huge advantage" is a stretch as John Currie was still able to come in within 8 minutes of them. The next closet competitor was about a half hour away. But hey, I'm the kind of guy who thinks a good driver can do more with less but, that's just me.

I'm sure if it was EVO you would have no problem defending him.

It's good to see you are at least consistent about making assumptions and acting on them rather using personal experience and facts. :thumb:

I never said that coilovers sucked big monkey balls and spring and shock was the only way to go.

No, you just said and I quote, "Don't really see the need for coilovers seeing how the winner of EMC 2 years running has standard coils and shocks." And really, if that's what you believe, that's what you should run on your rig :yup:

I just said that spring and shock can work as good as a coilover on a Jeep. And guess what? That's been proven.

:cheesy: You keep telling yourself that :thumb:

Well clearly you are an EVO fanboy who can't admit other people build better cars then EVO.

:yawn37: You'll forgive me but, I don't ever recall saying that Savvy didn't build a better car. Clearly, they DID as theirs held together and won the race. :naw:

I came up on this thread because I was interested in why he was running coilovers in stock class. That was it.

Oh, I see, now you were just "interested in why he was running coil overs in a stock class. That was it." I could have sworn you just came on here to ask a loaded question and do it so that you could tell everyone how you don't really see the need for coilovers seeing how the winner of EMC 2 years running has standard coils and shocks. My mistake :rolleyes2:

Peace brother - have a nice day

Doug! What is up brother? Yes, i haven't raced competively since 2010, it was awesome that Mel and Jim offered me a spot in the stock class rig. The addiction never left me, it's just been lurking quietly in my DNA :thumb:

Less talky and arguing and more awesome pictures and videos for those of us who are less fortunate and weren't able to make it out there to see any of it! Please and thank you! :thumb:

Wow!! You took a ton of great pics :thumb:

Still learning and practicing with the camera and hopefully I can take a bunch more at Glen Helen. Appreciate the kind words!

Here are a couple more of Alex Hardaway and the 4481. First one coming down Jack Hammer and the other at the bottom of jack hammer headed toward Chocolate Thunder with hammertown in the background.
