Coming up to Speed With Grubbicon

Got sided tracked and never updated this thread so here it is. After the towers were painted and the track bar mount (frame side) was done I then moved the axle side mount to make it right and then took it out for the last time fully welded it. I also bolted the top of the ORIs in for good.

After everything was right moved the axle out side so I could paint it. Now the rear axle is ready to go in the Jeep one last time to stay. At some point I plan to cut some of the bottom LCA mounts off and then make a skid for them. At this point Im more concerned about getting the Jeep going again so that can be put off to possibly when Im waiting on driveshafts to be made later.

After that I fixed the front track bar mount on the axle side. Not sure if I mentioned, but one day I set it on the ground to push the rear end over because it was sitting real sideways on the lift and I want to fix it because I was worried it was gonna come off. When I did that a couple of the tacks broke and it bent it up. So I broke the last couple loose and straighten back up with a bfh and fully welded it then tacked it back to the axle.

So then here we are today. My new shock tabs showed up to replace the ones that went MIA so now to get at it to finish up the front.

Ive also been debating on what Im going to do about my tierod and I believe my buddy that has a set of 05+ SD axles under his XJ is going to be taking his off and doing doubled ended ram so Im gonna see about buying his. Its 1.5" .250 wall DOM with 7/8 heims. From what I understand you cant run a straight tierod so his is already bent with gussets on both sides where it is bent.

Got the rear in for good today. Also put the cover on just because I wanted to see it. Its only hand tight and not sealed since its gotta come back off for gears. I also connected the filler neck back up (when I disconnected it I shoved a rag down it and ducted tape it up hoping to not make the shop explode when welding back there) and put everything back including tail light. Turns out when I unbolted it and pushed it back to get the towers in there wasnt room for it to come back forward. I was actually to pull on it enough to get the cap back over it. Definitely not factory position, but it will do.

Well no news on the JK really, but here goes some other stuff. The guy I bought he YJ front ended up tracking me down last Friday and wanted to buy it back so I sold it back to him. He ended up picking it up yesterday afternoon.

Probably should of put that money back toward the JK but you only live once right. Well I ended up buying my dads buddy's old rig he built long time back. Its a YJ tub and frame with the CJ front end. Its tube chassis behind the seats. It has 16" coilovers on the rear and a 8" coil lift on the front for a TJ (I would like to change this to coilover after JK is done). Its double triangulated in the rear and the uppers are triangulated in the front. 114" wheelbase on 40s (probably end up on 43 stickies) Its a kingpin60 in the front and 14 bolt in the rear thats shaved way the hell down. Its got a chevy 4.3l v6 in it and the list keeps going on. Here is some pictures of it that I found dated back in 2006 and here is also some pictures from me picking it up earlier and then screwing around in the driveway.

Did you tell him about how wonderful you treated it before you sold it back to him? :cheesy:

The new/old YJ looks sweet! Do you know why he mismatched the suspension like that? I've seen one or two like that now and I've been wondering if it's done on purpose.

Lol dude he saw all the videos on IG. He said "looks like you used it as I intended" lol. Funny thing was is he wanted it broke the way it was from windrock and paid me what I paid him for it.

When we first built it he did the coils in the front and stretched it and left it leafs in the rear. I believe when he did the links in the rear my guess is he just did coilovers because its easier then welding on a coil buckets as well as shock tabs. It went damn good for him so we will see how it does for me. I think he originally did coils in the front to help keep cost down just a bit.

Edit: I also think its just kind of the old school way of doing it. Usually only see it on older rigs or they will be leaf in the front and coilover or air shock in the rear. I think the method of thought behind it is it will help hill climbing since it can really unload and it will allow and since the rear has more travel it can follow where the front you can pick the line easier. Just my $0.02
