bent axle shaft flange

Well I know for a fact I have a bent rear flange just waiting to replace it when I finally get to doing my gears but mine does the same thing with the squeaking and stops when I turn right ( driver rear axle) easiest way is like they said jack it up rear axel and put it in drive and have something like a pencil or something that you can line up to the back of the rotor and see if the rotor is moving back and forth at all. This video should show better than I can say http://youtu.be/A_B5PwwH2y8

Interesting. I will have to try this. Thanks Sean!

the only thing that keeps me from thinking its the pads is that they are semi new still. did them about 10,000 miles ago. one would think they should last longer. plus like i said its only when i turn right is when i squeak so why wouldnt it do it when i turn left as well? (not trying to sound rude at all, its all serious questions :))

Your right outboard pad may be the one that's causing the noise. When you turn right, the rotor flexes towards the right outboard pad. Even though the pads only have 10,000 miles on them, you could have a slide pin or other hardware frozen, causing premature wear. Especially if they didn't get greased when the pads were replaced.

Interesting. I will have to have another look at them. Thanks!

just an update. took the jeep to a brake shop (midas) to have them makesure it wasnt brake related. they thought that some of the hardware was loose and tightened everything up for free. sadly noise still exists. im going to try and see if i can get a stock axle shaft that someone might have laying around since i dont have the cash for new ones currently. im currently working on getting a loan so i can purchase my jeep so my cash is tied up in that.

did you ever figure out what was going on? i have a terrible squeak that i think is coming from my rear passenger area as well. only difference is mine has progressively gotten worse and now is a constant squeak while driving straight. Hoping you figure something out that i might be able to try.

No sadly I haven't. It comes and goes. Hasn't been around for about two weeks till earlier tonight

Quick thought. Only 32,000 miles? Still under warranty ya? Take her in for a quick checkup.

And dial indicators would give. A pretty good idea if anything is bent. I'm a machinist by trade and have spend hundreds on fancy one. But a cheap accurate one would run you less than 20 bucks.

Bent axle flange repair options

Hey guys, as you can see in my WTB thread, my son ran the Jeep into a curb while "playing" in the snow. I would like to know if there are any repair options besides replacing the entire axle shaft assembly (with axle flange and axle). I've read the HowTo on using a pair of Ten Factory axles to replace the rear axle and end up with a trail spare, but my son is on limited finances and Dad is not coming to the rescue. :naw:

What is the minimal repair in this instance? It appears he could replace it with another piece-of-crap Mopar axle for about $350 or spend the same amount on a pair of Ten Factory axles (needing to find a local shop to press on the bearings) or he could spend about $450 for the pair of Ten Factory axles with everything included and pressed on.

Is this kit from ECGS also an option?

I assume pulling an axle from a local junkyard is a bad idea since there are a lot of unknowns, but that's just my inexperience writing. Thank you for any tips.

are you talking about the axle housing or the axle shafts? I'm guessing the axle shafts? what year jeep?
my bad, didn't click on the links you referenced.

you can get a set of Ten Factory through quadratec $350 free shipping, the ones you linked to look like Ten Factory but it's a crappy pic (like they copied it from another site lol)

First I'd have him get a job. Second I'd have him pay to fix it.

You play your pay imo

But on the topic I'd go stock now and then more spline aftermarket if you ever regear.

Sorry, axle shaft replacement. 2008 JKU.

Yes, I missed the links you posted.

as mentioned in my edits, the ECGS shafts look like they may be Ten Factory. if the ad is correct, bearings are already pressed on so they are ready to install, this would be your best option.

Quadratec has them for $350 free shipping but I'm guessing ECGS is in your area?

Yes, they're local although I've not dealt with them. I've heard good things about them doing the JK re-gearing so I plan to contact them about these shafts. The picture almost looks like the Alloy picture on Quadratec. Are Alloy chromoly shafts any good compared to Ten Factory?

Those look like a good deal, and I wonder if they even press the bearings on since it says ready to drop in and go. No other way to fix a shaft tho other than replacing them.

I was able to pop-up the clear image and they are Ten Factory, if the bearings are already pressed on that's a great price. :thumb:

I talked to Steven on the phone and he said the price ($375) includes everything ready to install including the bearings pressed on. He wanted me to call before stopping by so he could get them assembled for my JK since they have everything in stock but need to assemble it.

You can find them on ebay for around 200 if you look around. Pre-assembled too. Not sure of brand though.

Mine was a D44 Spicer (for a WJ). It was 210 pre-assembled.
