Wrangler 392 reliability

Buying a 392 is similar to flushing a whole lot of money down the drain. The electrical horror stories associated with the JL in general make buying a JL seem risky. If even a dealership can not figure things out, how can issues be solved if they happen on the trail?

Buying an old low-tech Jeep like a TJ and rebuilding it to personal preferences seems somehow safer than depending on such overly-complex technology.
I still think overall theJL is a great platform. I know that the electric issues are there, but most don’t experience or in my case self created. They made it more capable stock vs the JK stock. It’s probably more temperamental to mods, because the new computers and coding.

says the guy with a JL.
The morning of the start of a 2000 mile round trip, the main battery apparently suddenly failed (worked fine the day before and suddenly barely more than 5 volts). Rather than providing a useful indication that the main battery had low voltage, everything on the dash just went crazy.

This caused me to have much less faith in my JL, and my ability to diagnose and remediate common issues while on a trip.

Get a Subaru.

What would you expect in an old vehicle?
The battery died and the vehicle didn’t start.
That’s what happened anyway right?

Buy a new battery and just enjoy your jeep. The sky isn’t always falling.

Well look on the bright side. At least it wasn't the battery in a EV that you had to replace.

The engine in that thing is incredibly simple and you can visually identify all the major components.

Bought a Subaru for one of my sales guys years ago (lol, his choice) and what a piece of shit. Up until 100k, 90% highway miles, it was fine.
After that it was a money pit. Rear suspension wore out twice, needed a quart and a half of oil every week, when the suspension bushings went out in the front and back he had to replace the tires at the same time. timing chain needed replaced which cost a small fortune. Never again.

We had a WRX STI traded into us a few months ago, with 60k miles. Upon pulling the CarFax, motor was replaced TWICE. You'd think their flagship sports car would be somewhat better, guess not. Seems to be the least reliable Japanese brand for sure from similar reports I've heard. Old co-worker had a Crosstrek that had bad cats before 60k miles too.

Yup - forgot about the exhaust - had to do that too. And his was a Crosstrek. The garage I take my stuff to is owned by a guy that does a lot of tuner stuff & has a wild WRX even said don't ever buy a Subaru. 🤮

my surprised face.
This 2007 Subaru Outback has only left my wife stranded due to a dead battery and a flat tire. Otherwise has been utterly reliable.

This year has an ordinary automatic transmission rather than the CVT which causes issues for many.

The car is not exciting to drive, but it easily keeps up with traffic on the highway and the actual fuel economy is over 2X better than a Wrangler JL.
