The article says that the area was planted with red pine (good for lumber) after it was previously clear-cut virgin forest. So they would be cutting down a monoculture of trees rather than the pristine natural forest shown in the article. But trees are trees...

Unless they sterilize the soil it will be a never ending battle to keep the forest from reclaiming the area. Michigan has really fertile soil and long summer days. Stuff grows! The level of stupid involved is amazing!
