Speedy Cracker the 392

It’s been 5,000 miles since the 35-inch Nitto Ridge Grapplers were put on by @Disciple Off Road so it’s time for a rotation.

I pondered whether to do a 4 or 5 tire rotation and decided on 4. I really like the way the tires handle and the ride so I am 99% sure the next tires will also be the 35-inch Nitto Ridge Grapplers so there is no reason to introduce the spare into the rotation.

In the 5,000 miles since the tires, gears, and stiffer coil springs have been installed I have really been impressed with the drive-ability of this Jeep. Every Jeep I have owned has been fun off road but this is the first Jeep that has truly shined on road. It’s a pleasure to drive on the street and the highway. It has tons of power, tracks beautifully, and eats up the miles on the open road. The hardest thing about driving it is not grossly exceeding the speed limit! 🤣😂

It has some nice creature comforts like the infotainment system, heated seats, and heated steering wheel, but it’s still a Jeep. I have really enjoyed this machine and I am extremely happy I bought it.

My next mods will be a fridge/freezer for delicious beverages, a winch, and some bright ass auxiliary lights.

Oh yeah, Eddie- I want to be like you when I grow up and have a Baller Jeep Garage with a lift. I’m back slumming with my jack and jack stands in my driveway again. 🤣😂

I’ve always wondered about not using the spare. How many miles do you put on in a year? I was always concerned a tire would dry rot or I would get a flat after 30k miles and then have one brand new tire and three others with 30k miles.

I have not had any problem. The 392 lives in the garage and the JK lives in the storage unit in Carson City so no dry rot issues. I have not had a flat with any of the Nitto tires we have.

The Gladiator sits outside but the spare is underneath it out of the sun. We have about 40k on the Gladiator tires and they are still good. The JK tires have fewer miles but they are hard miles, however spare looks brand new, no dry rot issues.

I have been truly impressed with the Nittos but I see your point. Maybe someone else can chime in on this.

As to the spare, the whole Born on Date and shelf life comes into play.

Back when we were kids and the tires were made out of granite, age wasn't that big of a deal.
Now even the manufacturers say "Hey, our tires are only good for X amount of months after manufacture"

I always 5-tire rotate even if I plan to buy the same brand/model tires, it extends the overall buying timeframe (more mileage) before new tires are needed, the spare is always within an acceptable tread wear difference in case of a flat (I'm on the freeway and make regular longer drives) and, I was told the rubber compound needs to rotate under vehicle weight to remain pliable but ,tires have changed a lot over the years so not sure if it still applies.

Another thing to think about, tread patterns seem to change more often than not; mixing tread patterns I think still matters

I think the overall difference in the tire size (from treadwear) in case you need to use the spare still matters on solid axle Jeep and it would have to go on the front, not the rear unless you have FT 4-wheel drive.

I follow Eddie’s and Mel’s rotation pattern which is a four tire rotation, with no crossing, just front to back and back to front. It’s been working great.

I do the 5 tire rotation because someone else does it for me, and because it should result in 20% more mileage from the whole set. Tire rubber degrades over time (should be changed regardless in 4 or 5 years), even if it is not used. The spare is in a prominent location which gets a lot of sun and so it will degrade faster.

If you rack up the miles really fast then it may not matter as much, but it would be a shame to discard a tire which has never been used.

Yes, tires lose their flexibility/compliancy and grip over time. Part of the rubber compounds gradually evaporates and the rubber gets harder and less grippy. There is also concern that as the tires get stiffer, side-wall issues with heat become more likely.

I totally agree with our very own Overlander.

I have always thought that Overlander is one of the smartest guys in the forum. Every day I am even more impressed by what he accomplishes and how well he plans everything in advance!
 
I’ve always done the 5 tire, expect with my current set of tires, only rotated spare once, no reason other than my tire wheel combo is heavy as fuck and I was lazy a couple times, and then eventually it was sort of too late, I’ll probably need a new set next spring at the latest and will go back to 5 tire I believe, but my beadlock ring on my spare is the only one not scratched, so maybe not lol
