Should I Get a Supercharger For My Jeep JK ?

I just received my Ripp for my 2012 JKUR and it should be going in Saturday. I'm pumped about it I'll let you know how it goes. I also liked the idea that a twin screw SC because it kicks in at a lower Rpm but I would rather go with the manufacture that has the best support due to the most kits on the road.

Welcome to WAYALIFE and good luck to you with your RIPP. I have personally known several people with one installed on their Jeep and none of them impressed me. One flat out removed it from his Jeep because of all the problems he had with it.

That's not very promising but I'll take my chances.

its great for highway use. on the trails it can actually be a hinderance as opposed to a "boost" (pun intended). but then again it also to depends on what type of wheeling youre getting yourself into.

For the most part, this is true. Being in IL where it's flat, it shouldn't be an issue. Out here in the west where we have big mountains and long grades in the desert, they still really suck. I can't count how many times we've had to wait up for a guy in our group running a RIPP because he was over heating or his blower took a dump in these situations.

I have a RIPP installed on my 2010 JK and it was better than stock but not very good at keeping a consistent speed in any sort of incline. It is annoying to surge and then slow down, surge then slow down. Off-roading with one on an automatic is also a challenge since a lot of times it's power or nothing instead of being able to crawl. My club guys will be shouting at me to go slowly and crawl over something and I cannot get it to cooperate. It should have taken the money spent and just got an engine upgrade which is where I am now. Now that my jeep is 6900 lbs it's clear that the supercharger was the wrong solution. LS should be going in as soon as I can sell some old stuff off. Put the money towards displacement and do yourself a favor down the road as you continue to upgrade.

If your into overheating, loud whine, overheating, lack of performance, overheating and wasting money, get one. If you aren't then don't do it and save for a V8.

Being that you have a 3.6, I would say the Magnuson or Edelbrock would be best for you. The Magnuson puts out a bit more power than Edelbrock but the Edelbrock is a bit cheaper typically. I've driven both as well as the RIPP on the 3.6 and would go with Magnuson. But if you have the funds, a V8 swap would always be the way to go.

I wondered about heat with these kits, as most utilize the stock radiator. Haven't done much research on the JK supercharger kits...but know the problems associated with screw style blowers on other engines. Any issues with heat soak as well?

Dollar per HP, they never appealed to me.

I'm looking to build a 2016 JK, and I am looking at a Supercharger as well....!!! Most threads I have read have recommend RIPP, And they have the only system that seems to werk?? I talked to the guys down at Rubitrux in N.Carolina, They Recommended RIPP over :bleh:Magnuson, Edelbrock and Prodigy, which is a Turbo.

I'm not looking to do any Hardcore Wheeling:grayno: ( Serious Rock Crawling ) like Eddie & Cindy..... Mine will be 90% Street and the other 10%, The Occasional Weekend Warrior in the Trails.... And a few yearly events like Moab. I'm yearning to do Black Bear Pass, Imogene Pass and many others in Colorado.

If anyone has some solid info or personal experience with any of these systems, your feed back will be greatly appreciated.:thumb:

I would just do a big bottle NOS system so that way when you need the power it is just a button push away....

I installed on my 2010 JKU a Ripp SC, I enjoyed it and never had any problems living in AZ. I sold it and bought a 2013 mustang GT with a Vortec SC.. With some tuning got it to 605 rwhp (sold it since I had too many close calls and needed to slow down). Now I have a 2013 JKU with a procharger..(got a deal on it) I have never had a problem with any centrifugal SC. I like the SC on the jeeps for highway driving and getting back from trails or daily driving. The boost is only like 6 psi, so it is a little mild. If my jeep did not come with a SC on the 2013, I doubt I would have added one. I will say that I have added an aftermarket transcooler with fan, since the one the kits come with are too small ( in my opinion). Anyone in AZ that is thinking about a SC, hit me up and you can see yourself. It all comes down to personal preference...

So I'll chime in here since I had a RIPP SC on my 2011 3.8L JKU (automatic transmission) and now have an L96 6.0L with 6L80E. (spoiler alert, as OverlanderJK said, get a V8).

Yes, I know you have a 3.6L and if you have an automatic, it's a better transmission.

I thought the SC would be the answer to the lack of power of the 3.8L. It wasn't. I also didn't realize how important the transmission is in the over driving 'experience' with the JK.

I didn't have overheating issues of any kind, but I constantly battled pre-detonation.. especially during the summer. Yes, you can run 87 octane in the RIPP SC ( RIPP says you can) and you can listen to the pre-det while you have your foot into it. (this is with the intercooler installed as well)

The transmission still put a big turd in the punch bowl of driving experience. It couldn't find the right gear to be in and the SC exacerbated this. This sucked with rock crawling also.

I constantly worried about what this was doing to the engine (even at a conservative 8 psi of boost).

I finally decided this jeep was the one I'm keeping for the long haul and so I had MoTech install a V8 and 6L80 automatic transmission.

I installed the SC myself so I was in it for parts only. Unless you will be doing the install yourself, keep saving and get a V8 conversion. WAY better choice.

If I keep my current jeep. 3.8 I'll be going magnuson until the engine blows then an ls will happen over time. I'm not expecting the best thing ever with the sc just a few years of better drivability. A lot of people I've notice supercharge to fix a gearing issue not saying the above did it. But, some of us don't have the money for a v8 swap and more importantly their wife won't let them until it's a must ;)

Oh and the 3.6 can have some head issues so I'd avoid super charging under 50k miles. Might have warrantee issues.

hahaha... eyup. I'm lucky enough that when I said I wanted a V8 in the jeep my wife was cool with it. To the point that when I said I wanted a 5.3L she told me that was too small... go big or go home she said... I ended up with a 6.0L... hahahaha

Maybe when mine finishes her engineering degree. My brother offered free labor on a hemi but I'd rather get an ls.
