Scott's build of a 1981 CJ8 Scrambler

Well, I disconnected the carburetor and fuel is definitely making it from the pump thru the fuel filter. It was on for 1-2 seconds and this is what's in the bag:

So I don't think it's a clogged line, the fuel pump, or the fuel filter.

Does it run good otherwise? As in idles good and no misfires?

Carb could be tuned for a different altitude, or clogged jets.

Pull the plugs, make sure they look fine and test the spark on all of them.

Pop off the distributor cap and make sure the points are clean and working, and the spark advance is working.

Runs great. My guess would be ignition timing or accelerator pump. You could have a pump issue when engine is under load, but not too common on those. Is the fuel pump mechanical (bolted to the block)?

I'm not familiar with that model carb, but if it's like others, it will have an idle circuit and a main circuit, each with different jets. So it may idle fine but do nothing when you step on the gas. Take out your main jet and see if it's blocked. Also check accelerator pump as was earlier suggested.

This is a good thought, maybe rejet the carb for your area. Or possibly clogged jets, if it sat along time.

Didn't sit. Previous owner was driving it for errands around town and such.

Yeah, thought about testing spark or at least looking to see how dirty they are. How difficult is it to put them back in at the right gap?
There should be a cap on the PCV valve, it should be a 90 and not a T

That's part of what I need to sort out around emissions. Got a pic what it should look like? What does that do?

Maybe? Where would I look?

Also, I went and tried it again to show you guys a video of it. And...it did just fine getting up the hill. So weird.

Easy. Buy a gapper from autoparts store for less than a dollar. If you pull the plug wire and the porcelin on the spark plug isn't brand new looking, you might as well replace plugs anyways. If you're doing the work to pull the plugs, just install new ones.

As suggested, just plug that tee. It shouldn't be open like that. Auto parts store will have vacuum plugs cheap, different sizes for a couple bucks.

Trace your fuel supply line from the carburetor back to the pump. If it's mechanical, it will look like a little spaceship on the side of your engine block, if not and it goes down the frame, it's electric.

Went to take the Scrambler on its maiden voyage to see a local shop so they can tell me which emissions components I'm missing. Made it a few blocks before I started a slight incline and it started immediately struggling. Engine sounds like it's about to stall out or something. Pretty much no response to giving it gas or down shifting. Drove it around the neighborhood for a few minutes to let it warmup some more and attempted again. Same result. Thoughts?

So, had a similar issue on my 83 CJ7. We had the carb rebuilt, changed all fuel filters and air filter, etc and it still had issues. Adjusting the timing helped a bit, but still an issue. We ended up swapping for the Howell injection kit using, coincidently, Eddies installation write up. It solved whatever issue we were having. To this day I'm still not sure exactly what the problem was, but the Howell kit solved whatever it was. I hope you figure it out brother.

Did a quick search and found a bunch of different looks, problem will be the aftermarket air filter changes the way the vacuum lines run. At this point I would just make sure none of the lines leak and cap of any open fittings.

The PCV valve is part of what manages the blow by that we were talking about previously, it takes the blow by and re-routs it through the combustion chamber. It is part of the emissions on the vehicle and most places will fail you for open vacuum lines.

Still thinking on issue from this morning. I'll try it again tomorrow and see how it does.

In the meantime, I scored some half doors and soft uppers for $230! One of the uppers is slashed so I'll need a new one of those.

And yes, red doors on a green Jeep. Merry Christmas.

Congrats on the doors.
