Jeep won’t start

Although I haven’t posted yet that I bought my first jeep….. I bought my first jeep 2 weeks ago. I was gonna wait til I tricked it out a bit before posting pics. But……

I put my winch on this morning……works great. I tested it for 2 seconds. Then turned it off and even turned the power off from the little kill switch they supply (badland apex model). ….. I go back to start it a few hours later and the starter won’t turn over. Nor will the winch work. I put the battery charger on it and it just turns off saying the battery is full. All lights, all power work on the jeep but it won’t turn over nor will the winch move. I detach the winch and hook it to another battery and it works fine. But not on my jeep batter

I try jumping the battery….. nothing happens. Winch still doesn’t work nor does it try to turn over.

I check the ground cables…. All look good. I’m out of ideas here. Anyone got any ideas???

checked the fuses? also, did you short anything in the process of installing or disconnecting any of the leads to mount the winch?

When you detached the winch, did you detach the kill switch with it?

Never been a fan of winch kill switches; a winch should never draw any power unless it has bad circuitry.

post a pic of the battery terminals to show where you have the winch cables mounted; it may make a difference if you have it mounted to the smaller lines versus the primary battery lines?

I wasn’t sure which fuses to check. The odds of it being a fuse seemed remote since it was the winch and starter not working. I just detached the main winch cables from the battery. I had the winch cables mounted to the main terminal.

Ok…… so I put jumper cables on it and let it charge up with my truck for 30 minutes. It acted like it wanted to turn over so I thought that was weird but would never really make a full turnover to start.
I gave up and for grins I attached my jumper cables to the winch cables while my truck was running. My engine immediately increased rpm and the winch cables started smoking immediately!!! I yanked them off. This was while the kill switch was attached.

This made me think somehow my jeep battery was fried so I took my Nissan Altima battery out od the car and swapped it with the jeep. The jeep started. But every damn check engine light in the world came on and the steering wheel wouldn’t even turn. It was bizarre. Maybe because the Altima battery is so much smaller than the jeep battery???????? I have no idea. I’m guessing my jeep battery is fried.

Holy cow, man.

Do you have a pic of how the winch was hooked up to your battery?

There is a Z Case Fuse Array on the newer models, once that goes, it can cause all those warning lights.
check to see if any of the circuits look burnt - outlined in red

you may have to replace the aux battery as well; I'd pull them both out and get them tested.

Oh wow!! I hadn’t thought of that. I don’t see anything there that looks burnt. Anything else I should look for?

there's also an intelligent battery sensor (IBS) on the negative post (black box)

how much of a difference is between the nissan battery from the Jeep battery?
