It's Time to SUPERSIZE Moby - MoTech 6.2L LS Jeep Motor Swap

A buddy of mine installed a 5.3 LS with motech kit in his garage and he's not a mechanic. A week after the install he drove to Moab and then Vegas from Texas without a hitch. I know he's put about 15k miles since the install with only minor issues that where mainly from buying a used engine. Is the 6.2 kit that much different from the 5.3 kit?

Nope, they are pretty much the same. The only thing that was different about our swap than most is that we were going from a manual to automatic. Still, I have seen early Motech kits and while they seem to run fine, they still look quite different than ones that are available today. In some cases, substantially different.

They didnt happen to video the test run they did like they do on some rigs. I bet that would make you feel a little better and for the rest of us that are ready to see this beast as well.

Hi Eddie. Sorry to hear about the issues.

I am running Motech 6.2 conversion with zero issues. But my kit was the early one and my engine, tran and tcase were all brand new and bolted up and wiring harness installed before they shipped. All I had to do was drop the new transplant and hook up quite a few wires and thats it. It started on the first Go.
I had a manual also and now using 2013 stick with bump which works great. Let me know if you need any pics or maybe i should put a quick build thread up here.

my setup was 6.2LS3/6L80E/Atlas 2 Speed.

everything works as factory. I am also using factory PS Pump, Alternator and AC. BUT thinking about running PSC Hydro assist but will park it for a qhile.

Dont worry when you will hit the Gas pedal you will have a big :)

What codes were you throwing? There are 5 stages to the LS limp mode 5 being shutdown and I think I hit all but 5! Part of the problem is there all several different ways several of the sensors could be wired depending on year, manufacture and assembly plant of said motor. The variables are great for a turn key kit. The CanBus has two wires a plus and minus that loop through all modules,PCM, TCM and BCM with sensors with these same two wires running back to these three modules. Crossed CanBus plus and minus plus any combination of wiring differences can cause a lot of confusion in the computer world! I wish this was more strait forward but then it would be to simple and done by many by now! I know this is not giving you any warm fuzzy feeling but I feel your pain brother!
The only condolence I can give you is the Chrysler side is WAY harder to trouble shoot! Chasing a draw that only occurs once in a while right now on mine. When I rebuilt this burned up thing discovered Chrysler in there better wisdom has 19 different harnesses for the 2008 jeep wrangler 19!!! There computers work in a star network bus structure not inline like chevy. The TIPM or fuse box is the traffic cop that directs all CanBus traffic to your other modules. None communicate directly so if there is a problem sometime the code isn't even close to the issue! On the LS you start by eliminating modules and loop the CanBus back on itself till the ECM becomes happy then start working back out again. I weighed all of these concerns before picking the LS and bought one of Motech's first kits. That is why I say I feel your pain! Anything I can help with let me know! I know Robbie is swamped right now because this is over most peoples heads and gets rather overwhelming fast that is why he is doing so many in house right now! Let alone he is developing newer and better stuff all the time. I have no idea how he does it but that does not make up for you waiting either!

JK007 : How long did you work to build the LS engine in you're JK and did you remove the body or only the fenders/grill and hood.

Well I did the entire build not just the engine conversion. My build consists of EVO DTD system but in the rear I did a custom not the EVO lever, D60 Axles front and rear, custom rear bar etc.

The conversion was done at the shop so yes the Body was taken off completety, I would say 4 weeks of actual work done.

What shop? And out of curiosity, how come none of those upgrades are listed in your profile?

How are the axles holding up with the 6.2?

So I just got a long email from MoTech today and with a lot of pics and short of throwing ORE under the bus, showed how they've cleaned things up under the hood and under Moby and assured me that he's running well. Please don't misunderstand me, I am extremely grateful for all their help and they really did a great job going over things and taking the time to clean up a bunch of non-motor swap related issues. Fortunately, they also have a lot of experience getting LS swaps registered in Nevada and are going to help us with this as well. At this point and time, I can say that I feel more confident than ever that MoTech has the best option for LS swaps out there bar none. I also think that over the past year, they've made a lot of improvements to their kit and believe that potential buyers will have a much easier time with the install. Having said that, if you live in the west and/or can afford to have your Jeep worked on by them, I would just take your Jeep directly to MoTech. They clearly have the most experience with their own kit and have proven themselves to being able to get things fixed/resolved quickly.

I'll let you all know once we can get our hands on Moby again. Hopefully, it'll be sooner than later.

Thanks for the update! Glad you're finally getting Moby back...can't wait to see videos and pics of Moby alive and well again.

I'm hoping a 5.3 will be enough for me...especially given the 6.2 and pro rock 80 dilemma (should've just went the 80 to begin with instead of the 60).

Moochie is running a 5.3L and it's really nice - I think you'll find it to be plenty and a good match for your 60.

Glad things worked out...Im not big on companies throwing each other under the bus, especially in your case. ORE is a very competent shop, so if there were issues with the install, then it's the kit that isn't right, not the shop. At least they are getting Moby back on the road for ya. Enjoy and post up vids!
