Hurricane Helene

The dam to the south of us. Releasing 66,000 cubic feet per second. That is almost 500,000 gallons of water. or 30,000,000 gallons per minute. or 1.8 billion gallons per hour. And has been that way for a couple days now.

Just spoke with my parents and brother yesterday in Sarasota, FL. The devastation from hurricane Helene extends to south of there even. My aunt and uncle’s condo on the water had feet of sand pushed into it because the storm surge was easily 4-6 feet not including the waves. They are even located on the land side of the bay, the islands that line the gulf are in even worse shape. It’s clearly not as devastating as Tennessee and NC but I was shocked that to hear what my family had to say. Here is just a quick article I found.

I don’t even think you can put Katrina in the same category as anything else. Looking at those numbers compared, it’s staggering. That thing was wild.

I responded to Katrina and the destruction was insane. New Orleans was heavily damaged and the flooding was devastating, however the destruction in Mississippi was next level. Cities were leveled, not simply flooded but removed from existence. The big difference was Mississippi was self sufficient and New Orleans was a self inflicted victim. The people of Biloxi came together to fix their town, while the people of New Orleans mostly rushed to loot it. It was crazy.

Yup, except for a couple bad apples, everyone here is willing to help, lend a hand, donate or give money.

Except these fucks which is happening right here in my backyard as well as North Carolina.

Sad. As you have seen our first level of defense is ourselves followed by our families, our neighbors and then our communities. Relying on the Fed-Gov is a recipe for disaster and is Un-American.

My Lovely Wife and I spent the morning reviewing our preparedness and making plans to fill gaps. Skills, gear, and networking should be top priorities.

Figured this thing deserved its own thread at this point.

Here are some pictures that we took this afternoon. Its been a wild week here. The American people have been amazing in getting supplies and donating things from all over. The government and government agencies can suck a fat one. FEMA has been accepting donations from people who don't know any better and locking them up and not giving them out. National Guard has pulled rifles on people that were on horseback trying to get to locked in areas to help people and deliver supplies. National Guard telling them to get lost. They (National Guard) has been telling some people they will be at locations to provide manpower all week and had not shown up until today. The people helping in this area are friends, families and strangers. Digging through feet of mud in some houses and taking all their belongings to dumpsters. Its a wild sight to see.

Anyway, pictures here. Those big trees were not there. They were washed there, root balls and all. Yes there is a trailer in the river in the second picture.

This road we were driving on was under 18 feet of water. Its a weird feeling when you can see the dirt line ten feet above the top of your vehicle.
