Coilover Decisions - Few Lingering Questions

Is that a kit or a full custom 4 link? Gas tank relocated?

The Accutune set up looks nice. Those weld in brackets take care of my issue with bolt in coil overs using the stock shock brackets which are weak and never designed to hold the weight of the JK.

Essentially the genright kit with aluminum links and metalcloak ends. Yes now i have the genright 20gal tank in the rear

Sorry, i dont have it, just meant stuck at home like everyone else lol. Secondly thank you, im super happy with it and am dying to get out. Its basically the genright kit but customized for my dynatracs. All the mounts and crossmembers are genright, with a 3 link in the front. 14" coilovers through the tub in the rear, 12"s up front:rock::rock::rock:

It’s beautiful! Well done. Glad your healthy. As soon as this mess is over, we need to get these rigs out on the trail and put them to the test. It’s going to be great seeing how all our different set ups are going to run.

Hells yea brother. Maybe we can meet at badlands so i can cross that off the list. Or you can come over to rausch. Did u change axles or just go to 40s? I cant remember haha

Yup, a Fusion 4x4 kingpin 60 front, 13 bolt rear. Needed a bit more strength for the 40s. I’m still undecided on the suspension. But, I’m not in too much of a hurry there.

I’m up for anything as soon as the let us out to play. Badlands, Rausch, Windrock, I don’t care. If it has rocks, I’m in.

DTD isn't even on my radar as a possibility personally for various reasons, but one of them being cost. For the money I would rather outboard than go that route. I also get that adjustability of a rear CO is nice but honestly I have two loads I run....full gear and then no gear. I have never been unhappy with my ride with a basic shock and coil set-up. My intent is to honestly maximize travel. I want to push the limits of what I can. I just don't know if a "typical" rear CO really provides much more benefit due to the nature of the rear arms. If I could double triangulate then I get there is an absolute gain.

Would still love to hear more thoughts on the real benefit or limitation with going with a 2.0 or 2.5 too.

You could always look into the Motobilt back half kit. That would give some extra clearance for outboarding

If you didn’t see it, we put together a run to Moab and Ouray Colorado in August.

If it all works out with Rona slowing down, I hope we can all make it out.

This was definitely a cool read. It seems like everyone touched on all the good points on these kits. My two cents after going from a budget left to more dampening, like bubba said it’s the weight, not only the weight of the veh, but the unsprung weight of the axles, tires and wheels. From my experience you don’t have to boom through the dessert to take advantage of the extra dampening. It really helps, on the road, getting to and from trail heads, not to mention the endless pot holes in WV.

I am so ready to get out with you guys, I will be ready to hit any of this east coast destinations that have been mentioned.

Like Ddays said, anything that hangs down is going to catch on rocks, even with 40’s.

I really hadn’t experienced the unsprung weight moving the Jeep in ways that the it didn’t before these upgrades. Out of everything today, that was the most eye opening to me. It has started making me reconsider my direction on the suspension. Controlling the up travel so it’s not pushing the Jeep, in the wrong direction, has to be corrected on mine. I’m not talking about going really fast either. At most we were moving at 15-20. And if you hit a good bump, it really wanted to push the Jeep hard in the opposite direction. Definitely room for improvement for me.

Well I guess the good news I think I have a shop willing and capable of outboarding for me and very reasonable. I’m narrowing down to CO or maybe ORI after looking into more. A little nervous on tuning them though. Seems they really can be touching.

I would stick with coilovers. If an ORI strut fails/leaks then your kinda sol...with a coilover even if you blow a seal or something you still have the springs to ride on...

We added a lot of weight under our Jeeps with those new axles and 40s, now we need to control it.

I agree with Fury on the ORIs. If you were trailering it to the trails, it might be a different story. Since you’re willing to drive it across the country, I’d stick with coilovers.

Then I’m back where I started. 2.0 or 2.5????

If other well know companies like Accutune are making 2.5 kits and you are concerned about weight spend the extra 4-500 bucks per set. If you are good cutting of brackets and welding on new ones then better to over build I say.

I like what the EVO bolt on kit offers but between this thread and the info on my for sale thread, but I am liking the idea of Syneregy or Accutune brackets and 2.5s more and more.

I’m not really all that concerned about weight like Bill. My gear is tools. I am not loaded like Bill is most of the time. Good or bad I don’t know. Regardless, I’d rather not drop 2k for a what if but also don’t want to sell myself short.

No matter how you look at these Jeeps, their heavy. We’ve added over 1k compared to stock just with the axles and tires much less than the armor, winches, etc. And when we wheel them the hardest, we are loaded down with tools, parts, and food. They’re 6k Jeeps any way you look at it.

Thanks Jerry. Lol.

;)

I'm not knocking the 2.5's because I'm gonna be on 2.0's, but IMHO, if you're gonna go that direction and outboard them on the rear, I'd strongly consider just going to an EVOlever/DTD setup and be done with it.
Is corrosion a concern? Yes, but you can certainly mitigate that by keeping them sprayed with a wax & keeping them washed off and clean. Or just not driving it when it's shitty out.

My take on the 2.0's is that how many hundreds(thousands?) of bolt on kits has ORE sold and how many people have you seen or heard from saying "Man, I wish I would have gone 2.5s" ? I'm not saying that 2.5" are or are not better, I just think the 2.0's are sufficient. But if this is something that's lingering just get the 2.5's. We all know how that works when we don;t do something we've got stuck in our minds...

I bet you're well over 6k now. I weighed Gruff on a CAT scale and I was there with 37's/PR44/PR60. I bet we're closer to 6400+/- now.
Eddie posted up a pic of Moby on a scale and I think he was at 6800 or so.
