Coilover Decisions - Few Lingering Questions

It’s more like $8500 for all of it

It's about $10500 if you do the longarms at the same time. The DTD and lever alone are $8500ish.]

That was from AMW. The front kit on off-road evolution’s site is $3,500 and the rear is $4,900 on the site. So $8,400 in parts from them. I’m sure there’s more parts needed than that like the high clearance LA kit. But still 10-12 to install which is twice or more to install as compared to the Bolt-ons.

Ya, I did a quick search and the kit I looked at quickly had a bunch of other stuff in it. Thank you for clarifying.

DTD isn't even on my radar as a possibility personally for various reasons, but one of them being cost. For the money I would rather outboard than go that route. I also get that adjustability of a rear CO is nice but honestly I have two loads I run....full gear and then no gear. I have never been unhappy with my ride with a basic shock and coil set-up. My intent is to honestly maximize travel. I want to push the limits of what I can. I just don't know if a "typical" rear CO really provides much more benefit due to the nature of the rear arms. If I could double triangulate then I get there is an absolute gain.

Would still love to hear more thoughts on the real benefit or limitation with going with a 2.0 or 2.5 too.
Last year I talked with the other ower of Evo for about an hour over his thoughts on his own kits. Really nice guy just cant remember his name and no it was not Mel. He was the one who told me the 2.5 were a little overkill for the CO system. He also said if he had to choose only one set up to be run it would be the 2.0 coil over kit because it's the best all-around in his opinion and easier to maintance and install. The DTD is amazing when you get to see it in person and it makes you drooled. I walked away for that conversation knowing that CO was the next step for me over the DTD.

Now other side of the fence, if I could weld like some of you guys on here that might change my mind going to the DTD since that would save a good amount of coin. Overall IMO I feel you get more for your money with the CO kit.

You bring up a good question about the rear and the weight load on the rear transfering to the rear shock brackets, but I couldn't imagine Evo not looking into that in depth and found it to be just fine. Have you heard of anyone snapping a rear lower mount off?

When using EVO's high clearance arm mount kit with coilovers this is what the arm and CO brackets look like. They are welded as well or better than the factory arm mounts. Of course it's setup differently with the std bolt on kit that uses the stock CA brackets

I am not concerned with the stress on the mounts at all. More simply over real performance gain.

Yeah, the mounts on these new 13 bolts are stout.

But if you went high clearance you'd have to cut them off & weld on the new ones on I posted. These do hang lower than the Evolever mounts, but they are higher than the lower CA mounts when running coils. Those mounts are massive...

I’m interested to see when we are on a run together how much difference there is between the standard LCAs verses the high clearance going over the same rocks with 40s. It’s really going to piss one of us off. [emoji23]

Well as soon as Gruff comes home a simple tape measure will tell you the clearance from the bottom of the mount as to what the real difference is.

While I will probably get the high clearance mounts in the near future, the mounts are not hanging me up and neither are the arms being lower. There are a lot of scratches and beat up metal, but I don’t get hung up

That’s my hope.

Agreed, but seeing how that plays out in the field will be the test.

Are you set on Kings? Though they are the gold standard, there are many other companies out there that have a quality product.

If you are looking for a bolt on style front bracket, maybe give JKS Mfg a look. Their set up for JKs is front CO with spring/shock setup in the rear. I think total for bracket and Fox CO is about $2k.

Full disclosure, I have never seen one installed nor heard of any reviews.

Just throwing it out for consideration.

I honestly don't want Kings. I am pretty set on going with either Fox CO but more possibly is an ADS CO with probably the Accutune bracket set-up. But may just do a full Fox/Accutune package.

If I had done accutune, I would have gone Fox as well.

corrosion is the main reason because of where I live. Fox definitely have a better rep for holding up a little better. ADS has me very intrigued though. Former King guy who went on his own. Rebuild of them seems much easier. Finish quality is supposed to be great and they will custom build and tune too.

What do you like about the ADS? Steel body over aluminum?

I like the idea of the steel body for maintenance. I like that the shaft they use is harder. I like the seal set up for the them as well. Overall seem to be very well built shock. I'm certainly not sold but strongly considering.
