The steel one, lol. It should have taken about the same time to cut out as the cardboard one but took waaayyyy longer.

Where did you get the steel from? Looks like a recycled street sign, but it's too thick for that.

It was an old sign that a friend gave me. .250 steel. He gave it to me about 3 years ago knowing I'd use it for something. First thing I used it for was making my trans skid a couple of months ago.

Got the biggest part of the carrier done today. Welded on the main support plate.

Removed bumper to finish welding on the spindle and latch support area. Soaked it all in undercoating. Plasma cutter worked much better today.

Thanks, guys. The metal on the jeep was really thin and hard to weld. You'd think Jeep would have made the metal thicker knowing all the soccer moms driving these things would be installing custom tire carriers at some point.

Got a lot more work done on the carrier. Decided to go with a simple pin for the latch. This thing drops about 2 inches below the steel plate in the bumper. I welded on a small square pipe underneath so the tire carrier rests firmly with no sagging and it keeps the air gap even. Simple design and should work.

Square pipe under the swing arm for the resting point and gives it even spacing.

Then I cut apart the old upright which was really tricky, because the swing support sits at an angle and the upright had to be angled so that it has a vertical appearance when it's welded on. Took some tricky compound miter cuts but I lined it up and it looks good.

I just have some more prep work and then I can weld it up.

Good progress man! I love projects like these where you don’t really know exactly how everything is gonna come together. Then in the end, it comes together like a kit made just for YOUR jeep. [emoji106]

Nice to see this coming along :thumb:

Thanks guys. Hoping to have the welding done today or tomorrow. Just for kicks, I weighed the pile of steel that I removed from the old one. 23 pounds is what I took off. May not seem like much, but the old one was a pretty simple design. New one should be much lighter smaller, higher, and tighter toward the Jeep.

Its coming along nicely man! I went the latch route but curious how well the pin will work. I was concerned about it rattling so wanted a compression fit. Will be curious how it all works out in the end.

Alright Alright Alright

Thanks. I'm going to have pressure on it like the old one I built. At the top of the upright will be a horizontal piece that pressed against the Jeep hatch about .125. Like this:
