FYI, if you do damage the rope at that location, that's not where the force is held. The winching force is held with the first 5 wraps on the drum, so you'll be ok. I'm not telling you to be careless, but if you do knick the rope there, you won't be out of luck, it will still winch fine.

Thanks for the info, Almost felt I was doing something wrong because it was so hard to pull into it. If the rain brakes for a while I'll try again

I agree with ya. I used a 12 gauge wire and a small touch of wd40 to get mine through. Not a bad design but sometimes can be frustrating.
 
Looks like the weather might be clear tomorrow! After the torrential rain today it will probably be messy on the trails! Ought to be fun!
