How many miles on those arms? The rear end on JAWS had been feeling kinda funny - like it had torque steer and or just a bit sloppy and for a while now. Anyway, I was looking at it in the rear view mirror yesterday and noticed that the whole thing was literally shifting over to passenger on acceleration and back to driver when decelerating. Needless to say, this is what the triangulated upper arm bushings looked like.
Fortunately, Summit is local to me and they had rebuild kits in stock.
And, after a quick trip there and back, I spent the better part of the morning replacing them.
All 4 bushings were blown or in the process of being blown but one was so bad that two halves were welded together and had to be cut apart.
Anyway, thing rides great again
DING DING DING!!! Give the man a cigar for asking the right question!!How many miles on those arms?
one thing I did with the johnny joints when I replaced them on the jku (170k miles of zero maintenance), I rubbed some grease in between the joints, on the outer part of the bushing and inside the joint housing before assembly.DING DING DING!!! Give the man a cigar for asking the right question!!
So... I don't think there's more than 10k miles on them and really, that is way low. Normally, Johnny Joints will last a LOT longer and I'm almost embarrassed to say, I don't even remember when was the last time I rebuilt the ones on Moby. Something weird is going on - some kind of big time bind or something. I should note, our rear axle was always a little off center and today, I took the time to try and fix that. Both upper arms were exactly the same length coming off but when I put them back in with some correction, I ended up needing to make the passenger side arm a bit longer. Hoping this helps across the board and provides a longer term fix.
Bind on a double throw down? Say it isn’t so. lol Glad you are breaking frame side control arm bolts though.DING DING DING!!! Give the man a cigar for asking the right question!!

For now anywayDamn beat to hell! But glad it fixed your problem
I don't know how they come from the factory but the Johnny Joints on my other Jeeps have always held up pretty well and for a long time, as you have pointed out on your Jeep. But yeah, I do the same and lather everything up during assembly but I use the molly grease that Rock Jock recommends.one thing I did with the johnny joints when I replaced them on the jku (170k miles of zero maintenance), I rubbed some grease in between the joints, on the outer part of the bushing and inside the joint housing before assembly.
Didn't seem like the zerk introduced much grease into the joint but after 170k miles, they were chewed up but nothing like what yours look like after only 10k miles.
I wonder if using green grease made a difference, the grease was old but still pliable and grease like.
Do you think they're generating that much heat from your leisurely Sunday drives through the desert?
LOL - right?! To be fair though, Moby never had that problem, just the upper control arm breakingBind on a double throw down? Say it isn’t so. lol Glad you are breaking frame side control arm bolts though.
When it rains, it pours. Here's a list of some of the things I've been working on in an effort to get JAWS ready for the New Year Kick Off Run:
Upper Radiator Hose Leak - REPLACED
PSC Hose Leaks at the Steering Box - FIX
Rear Upper Control Arm Blown Out Johnny Joints - REPLACED
Rear Drive Shaft Carrier Bearing Blown - NEW SHAFT INSTALLED
Dash/Infotainment Electronic Problems - CAN HUB REPLACED/WORK IN PROGRESS
Still doing other routine maintenance as well but aside from the electrical gremlins, I think we're about ready to go. And really, even with the electrical shit, none of it is preventing this Jeep from being driven so there's that.
