Are you the owner of the business? If so you would fall under the personal conveyance rule which should exclude you from needing a cdl. I’m no means a lawyer though. From IN to Moab I don’t believe any of the scales have a sign for vehicles over 26k lbs to enter so you should be fine on the ride out and back.

"Not For Hire" is pretty commin way to go here. As far as the CDL goes... how could Cali not recognize your plate and license exemptions? That would be like an Arizona vehicle with limo tint all around rolling into the state and getting a tinted window ticket, no? Not gonna happen

My Jeep got ticketed in Cali for window tint with Idaho tags back in the day. Cali is a bunch of assholes in my experience. I say this as I’m headed to Oakland

Assholes maybe... can you be stopped for that tint, sure, but that is not a legit ticket if both your DL and plates match and not CA

No that is 100% ticketable. Same as Jeeps needing mudflaps in certain states. If you’re driving through their state you are required to abide by their laws and vehicle codes. Is it common for dumb shit like tint? No, but is 100% legitimate. Not for hire sticker on the truck and trailer normally takes care of the hassles.

That's right.

I got pulled over for no mudflaps in Utah once, driving my Toyota.

If I had washed it after elk hunting in axle deep mud, it probably would have never been a problem, as it hadn't been on a dozen other trips.

He did let me go with just a warning.

As long as things look proper, there is usually no problem, but there is always a chance of meeting the wrong guy on the wrong day.

Hit a nerve did I? I assure you it wasn’t t personal since I don’t know who you even are but Cali does have a shit ton of bullshit laws and regulations. Many of which have cost me personally thousands of dollars. It’s a nice place to visit and amazes me so many people choose to live there.

The trailer I’ve used recently is a 14k rated 20ft. A full width JKU uses up quite a bit of the deck length and getting the balance between too much and not enough tongue weight is only about 12” of movement worth (not a lot).

I mean interesting because for the amount of inertia moving around behind, you really don’t have a lot of lever between the hitch and axle(s) centerline. Only to mean that on open highway I’d definitely prefer either a longer bumper pull or a gooseneck. A longer bumper pull in town though could definitely start becoming tedious.

I think I’ve decided to stick with my original plan of the gooseneck but get a longer one and weld in some more storage boxes. Mega ramps for sure, thanks for the help.

I saw your around east St Louis. There’s a place there called tricity canvas. They have a billboard off 270. They are at exit 3 on 270. They have tons of toolboxes and can get you what ever size you may need or want. Decent prices too. All sorts of tie down equipment as well.

So I think I’ve decided on the 20’ deck over gooseneck with 5’ dovetail I’ve been planning all along. It’s sitting on my dealers lot and ready to go and has most of everything I want on it. Not sure if it would benefit me to go longer so I could position the Jeep differently? But if it’s a better to go a bit longer then I’ll look into it.

Others may have more input, but I think being a gooseneck 20+5 you’re going to be just fine at that length.
Unless it’s 15+5 in which case I would go a bit longer. I like my Jeep to be off the dovetail when loaded but not nosed against the front.
