TIN CAMP - This is the Last One...

Not sure if this is the same herd of Elk but if so, they've been spending a lot of time out in Tin Camp, in broad daylight and for the better part of the day. They sure are a lot of fun to watch, especially when they decide to munch on the cameras LOL

Here's another clip of them hanging out by the cabins and pond. Sure would be nice to see this in person.

And last but not least, here's a clip of Elk enjoy a tasting of our camera up by the front gate 🤪

Good looking herd. It’s funny how they recognize the cameras and end up playing with them, I haven’t seen them play with anything else in your other videos. Also, crazy they hang so close to the road with traffic and such. Whenever I’ve been close to an elk herd they’ve run off like I was intent on killing one of them… they were correct. 😂

Do you have any interest in hunting them out there? Good meat. When’s elk season there?
Elk season in Nevada starts early August and runs through late January. There are specific dates for different categories of hunting too:

Early Antlered Hunts:
• Many units have early hunts that run from early August into September, often coinciding with the beginning of the elk rut.
Late Antlered Hunts:
• Some hunts continue into October, November, and even December, with some units having late hunts extending to the end of January.
Antlerless Hunts:
• Antlerless hunts (for cows or other non-antlered elk) are also common in Nevada, with season dates and units varying.
Muzzleloader and Archery Seasons:
• Nevada also has specific seasons for muzzleloader and archery hunters, which may overlap or have different timing than the rifle hunts.
Unit-Specific Regulations:
• Elk hunting regulations, including season dates, weapon restrictions, and quotas, are often specific to each game management unit.
Silver State Tag:
• Nevada offers a Silver State Tag, a statewide tag for elk (and other species), which can be applied for without affecting your bonus points.

Unfortunately, you need to apply for tags in spring and we already missed that for this year. But otherwise, sure, if we could get tags, doing some hunting could be fun.

they only have 1 tag window? damn, that's harsh

Tell them you've been seasoning them and they need to be harvested for best flavor (y) (y)

Have you looked into landowner tags? I’m pretty they are based on the number of animals that use your property and you can sell them to whomever you want (not uncommon for LO tags to sell for $10K or more depending on the quality of animals).

Honestly, I’d never heard of LO tags but started looking into it and damn, I think you’re onto something 👍🏻

Okay, looked into this a bit and it turns out that you need a minimum of 60 Elk on the property and Fish & Game needs to come out, count and verify as much. I don't think we have more than 2 dozen or so. Also, monetary compensation is only provided if the land in question is a cash crop - range land does not count. But, there's more to go through and maybe there's still a way to make something work.

You could just claim self defense because “It’s coming right for me!!!” 😂 But really, if you have the FG out there your herd will be on their radar and will most likely manage them from that point forward. Just do it like the old folks did, take them out with an AR and a suppressor.

I can come out and help make your maximum about 10.

MOTHERS DAY WEEKEND 2025

So, as some of you may have noticed, I've been off the forum for a bit and that's because Cindy and I decided to head out to Tin Camp to de-winterize it and spend some quality time there and through Mothers Day weekend. Of course, while we're out there, I have zero cell and internet or at least, if we don't bring out our Starlink (which we didn't) and could only get service when we went into town. Anyway, here are a few pics that I took from our recent trip.

A big part of why we bought Bandit was to use him for trips just like this. A Jeep that's fun to explore and wheel in AND be good for work and carrying stuff to places like Tin Camp.

One of the first orders of business was to head up to the top of the hill, set up our solar powered well pump and get water going into our cistern.
20250513094741-64970759.jpg

Unfortunately, there were clouds in the sky and that prevented the solar panel from getting enough juice going to operate the pump  Fortunately, we have a second and more powerful pump that can be run off a generator (y)

Yes, it's a Great Basin Rattle Snake and venomous but they do a great job of rodent control and we have a LOT of chipmunks and mice around. Cindy and I aren't afraid of snakes but are somewhat concerned about Ripley coming across one and there's always the, just not seeing it until it's too late thing. Obviously, it wouldn't take much for me to deal with them but the question is, should I? What would you do?

After a long day of working on the property, we decided to head into town for one of the best steak dinners we've had anywhere - JT's!

I have to say, more than mice, these guys are a real pain in the ass! Yes, chipmunks and holy hell, they really don't give a shit about us and if anything, they're kind of pissed that we're trying as hard as we are to keep them out of the cabin.

Most of our time on this day was spent working on plumbing problems and cleaning but we did get out from time to time just to enjoy the place.
