The building of Bison

Really like the look of your wheels...

Always good to shake her down on easy trails before heading west...

Thank you, I’m going to try to get it out every couple of weeks just to keep adjusting and learning.

A couple more updates from this run:

During the 40D upgrade, I also upgraded the NAV setup and switch setup on the Jeep. Today was the first real world use of both systems.

For the NAV, I went into the Garmin Overlander System for the Nav and honestly I couldn’t be happier. The way I have it mounted allows easy operation while on the move. It’s paired with my inreach mini for comms when I’m out of cell range.

It does block the AC controls but if you really need to adjust something, the magnetic mount makes it a breeze just to pull the nav panel off.

The good thing about that location is my elbow is planted firmly on the center console. (I have the Tuffy center console so it does keep you elbow a bit higher.) I can easily navigate or zoom on the trail with out stopping.

The overlander has two separate GPS functions, road and trail. Road is typical with one added feature, the distance to the next rest area. I’m getting old.. The Trail portion is great with different maps from Garmin to USGS and aerial photography. It’s simple to go between those map layers to get the clearest picture of the terrain ahead. I downloaded GPX files from the State and loaded them in at my office a couple weeks ago. They made it easy to navigate the ORV trails and staying off the narrower 50” wide max trails. The 8” screen is crystal clear, it’s basically a tablet in a hardened case. I have all the trails now loaded for East meets West and I am now really excited to see how it works out there.

For the switch upgrade, I installed the ARB Linx system. It’s a pain to install, but today it worked seamlessly on the trail. The system integrates the compressor, lockers, frig, TMPS, lights, comms, and battery into one touchscreen.

The menus are easy to select from and everything worked as it was supposed too. We used the compressor settings to air the tires down to 15 psi. The TMPS has a setting for off-road, and adjusted that to turn off the low pressure alarm. The battery alarm is what clued me in on the earlier dash lights issue. The lockers were easily selected when we were crawling it and engaged and disengaged immediately. And when we were done, we sent the target pressure for the compressor at 28 psi, plugged all 4 tires into the system and ate lunch while it brought everything back up on its own. It worked exactly as it should. Pretty cool little system!

Nice shake down pics! I bet the first thing you thought of when your dash lit up was JKBrick. Lol cause I did when I was reading it. Good to see you were able to get out today. It was a nice day here in Michigan.

It was! Glad it was an easy fix.

I really needed to get out of the house. Other than a stop at a gas station, we weren’t around anyone.

Yeah, it sucks about Coles Jeep. We’ll find out next week how bad it got screwed up.

It was great get out and putting everything to work.

For sure, I really didn’t want any major issues with the whole family out.

Nice you were able to get it out for a test run.

Guess the run fell under essential provision [emoji12] JEEP looks great

Thank you! And yes, Jeeping is an essential activity! In Michigan, all the trails are open on state land, but long sill distance travel is discouraged. When you compare St Helen to Moab, it’s just right around the corner. I wouldn’t consider that long distance [emoji848]

Your Jeep is looking great! I love that Nav system setup [emoji106]

I’m glad you were able to get out on a shake down run.

Damn Bill. I am so jealous. I’ve been eying the closest open park in surrounding states trying to find something. Need my Jeep back first though. Stupid hydraulic fittings aren’t in yet. I must say Bison looks great on the trail. A few tweaks here and there and you should be pretty set. Little nervous to hear about the rear wheel sensor though. Keep me posted if there is sonothing I need to be aware of!!

Yeah, it blew oil all over the undercarriage. I hope they got it shut down in time without any damage to the engine.

Sounds like rustproofing to me. Also 4.0l can run like 10 minutes and not seize they found that out during cash for clunkers. So I’m sure theres no real damage in the ant of time it took to realize and then pull over.
