Rear axle leak

After you wipe all of the water-oil mixture out (as much as you can), spray the interior and the cover down with brake cleaner multiple times to ensure all of the emulsified oil has been cleaned out. If you can't get all of the emulsified oil (milk shake looking stuff) squirts some warm new gear oil in around the ring and pinion ensuring you fully lubricate the bearing and then wipe the pumpkin dry with clean rags. Then apply a single continuous bead of RTV around the sealing face of the pumpkin. Then install the cover following the directions previous members provided.

If you find metal chunks at any point, I would take it to a trusted shop for further inspection. Also, take a few pictures to share with the forum.

Good luck! You've got this.

I'm almost 3 cans of brake cleaner in and I got most the diff itself clean but that milkshake/ pancake batter stuff is still leaking in from the bearings (I assume it's in the axles?) I'm letting it keep draining as much out as possible before I button it back up. IMG_1476063351.896339.jpg

I think its fine. Id maybe use a scotchbrite pad to clean it up.your going to be filling with oil and driving it again so it will be coated in oil. As long as the moisture is gone you should be good to go

Assuming there's no way to do that without tearing the axle apart?

Ill see if someone has a better idea but honestly if it was me in that position, id strongly consider pulling the axles to make sure all the contaminates are cleaned out. Hopefully someone chimes in with a better plan

make sure any old gasket is off the surfaces before you apply rtv.

at this point, you may need to do a couple more gear oil changes... clean it out best you can, seal it up and put the oil in, drive it around for a bit to get that oil warm and mixed with the existing batter...

then do the process all over again until you get only oil draining out.

if you can't get it all out you will need to pull the axle shafts - or just go ahead and pull them now

I'm not in a position now to be able to pull the shafts so I'm going to go ahead and just make multiple oil changes and hope that'll get it all out.
Thanks for the suggestion.

Can you leave the diff cover off and jack up each side individually to try to get anything left in the axle tubes to flow to the diff?

I wouldn't be surprised if your bearings are about shot on the axles.

If you can't pull them just fill the diff and drive for a day or two then clean it again. That'll get the rest of the shit out.

I was thinking the same thing. A lot easier to do I imagine.

you could but there will still be a film left behind so additional changes will need to be done.

The hot oil will help break down that film, that's why the additional changes

There was still batter leaking out of the axle but I went ahead and bolted it back up and filled it with new oil since I don't have time to wait for it to slowly drain. I'm going to run it tomorrow and hope the heat loosens up the rest of the crap in there. I'm planning on making as many changes as necessary to clean it all out if it means not having to tear open the axles.
