My JKU (Low Budget, Slow Build)

I read this whole thread. Glad to see I'm not the only one on a budget build. Your jk looks awesome and just seeing some of the end results motivates me to keep building mine up.

Thanks for checking it out. -So many possible upgrades and modifications, so little money lol. It's slow, but it'll come. 35s on the not too distant horizon.

I ran into a great deal for a lift but it felt pointless if I didnt get bigger wheels and tires so I left it. I regret it everyday. Tires and wheels are super expensive.

Tire thought

Just thought I would throw this out there if you havent got your 35's yet. I got a set of 5 tires from a retread company called Treadwright. The set of 5 shipped to my door in oregon was a little under $800. The Tread design is the old Goodyear MT/R pattern. I believe they are called the guard dog. Its actually the 3 set i've bout from over the years. The set i'm running now is there 315/70R17(35ish). The only gripe i have ever had about these tires is there a little heavier than a new tire. I've aired them down to 12psi on the dunes and 15psi on the rocks and never an issue. The last set i owned was on a F150 and i was abot to get almost 45000 out of them(they were pretty low on tread at that point). Just my:twocents: on the subject since you are on a budget. There are a few long term reviews out there on the tires. Wrangler forum actually has one i think.

Hahaha, yeah. I could definitely say the same thing.

The weather is getting nice in San Diego. That top is too bulky / heavy to take off myself. I just picked up this little number from Harbor Freight for $20.

Now I've just got to work out the details in my mind of how I'm going to remove the top and store it on an upright roll away cart.

There are a few threads on jk-forum showing some fairly inexpensive home-made brackets for use with a hoist.

Oh, believe me me, I've been combing over them. What I want to do is combine the hoist with a storage cart. This way I can remove and mount the top easily, without giving up space in the garage by having it hanging from the ceiling.

Pretty sure the tow package Sahara and X/Sport models have always come with 3.73 gears. The new 2012's even offer 2 different tow options, one with 3.21's and the Max package with 3.73's. $50 difference, I think.

Might consider an engine programmer from Hypertech or Superchips and a new air filter and snorkel (all over time, of course) to improve performance until you can save for the 4.88's or 5.13's.

Well, I'm I've heard from a couple resources the '07s with tow packages were equipped with 4.10, and when I did the tire spin rotation count (several times to be sure) I consistently came up with four and a hair rotations of the drive shaft to one full tire rotation. Seems like I've got the 4.10's. But I'll definitely get the programmer, like you said just so shifting and all that stuff goes smoothly. The tire rotation thing is what I'm banking on. I guess I can hit up my dealership for a print up of the build sheet.

Just made my home made sun screen using 90% sun blocking mesh from Home Depot, some grommets and some bungee balls. The idea was that this would be temporary until I got the dirty dog sun screen, but it came out pretty decent. Depending on how it holds up I may just use it all summer!
