Personally, I prefer to use GAIA on my iPhone. Works on a tablet as well and can be had on Android too if needed.
I was thinking of getting the Garmin Overlander. Wondering if anyone has used it, or if there is something better for trail maps.

Another Gaia user here. You can download the maps to your phone so you can still see where you’re at even if there’s no service. Was thinking about having a dedicated iPad with a Bluetooth gps but haven’t really had a need for all that.

There is, but it's community generated. I pay yearly because I like the additional map layers available.Do you need an account or pay a monthly service to search and download trails? I’ve had the free version for a while but there is no database of trails.
I just downloaded Gaia and have been playing around. How does everyone find cool trails in their area? The Texas hill country has some. But I’m having issues getting them on the app. Or do I just need to figure out way points and build my own route?

I’m not sure you can from the app but if you go to Gaia on your PC you can select an overlay of all the tracks that people have made public. It’s pretty useful.
I didn’t know there was a free version, I think I bought the app for $20 but there’s no monthly service. The only database of trails I’m aware of is the public tracks I mentioned above.

You can download tracks and import them into Gaia.
