I need help! 6 speed or AUTO

My personal preference is a manual. The original military Jeep was a manual and I would would not buy a Porsche or Ferrari in an auto. JMHO

I'm all for the manual, but I had to let the wife drive it for 3 months last year when I had my elbow repaired.

Ok... Here are some of my reasons for each... I got a six speed because I'm a man.. Oh wait, none of that... I got a six speed because they are way more fun to drive. They are also better in sand in my opinion (sometimes the auto won't let you get the RPMs high enough).. Probably same for mud.. One big benefit for me, was that I go into the woods alone a lot.. Whether it's exploring, hunting, or whatever.. If my battery or starter dies, I can just bump start it.. Another big pro for me was the ability to downshift in an emergency, or even just for normal hill decent offroad..

Auto makes driving in the rocks easier and less stressful, if you were going to make a rock buggy, most pros would say to do an auto.. That is why I am sometimes torn.. I love big rocks, but also love my 6 speed.. I make it work and love it.. Other reasons for an auto are all mostly just because it's easy.. Drink coffee etc..

I like to completely control my jeep so I will "stick" with my 6 speed..

I agree with this completely. I love my little 5spd tj. Manual in a jeep just seems right. Sometimes I wonder how nice it must be to have an auto though. My wife's mazdaspeed 3 is a 6 speed so there are definitely times I miss my duramax but I love jeeps.
 
I have driven and wheeled manuals my whole life and it's what I know best. I love them as they can be a lot of fun BUT, if you're asking which is better in terms of wheeling? You're kidding yourself if you think a manual would be better. Autos are so much easier especially on the rocks, Cindy and I call it cheating. BUT, if you play hard, it really is the way to go just as much as running lockers. Sure you can wheel open diffs but, lockers will make things a lot easier. But hey, I'm just a mall crawler. :yup:

But it really is easier, especially on rock. But if our jkur was an auto, the wife would be daily driving it, not me :D

:cheesy: Now there's a legitimate argument for running a manual :crazyeyes:
 
AUTO...plus with the new tranny you can still use the tap shift/auto stick if you feel like shifting manually...best of both worlds:2thumbsup:
 
Personal preference for me. Trucks should be auto and I like my cars manual. For me it has to do with the seating position. In a Jeep or truck the seat is usually more upright and off the floor. In a car your lower. Ergonomics are better for me using a clutch if pushing out from my body than down while seated. Crazy I know but I'm very happy with the auto.

I bought an auto because I'm already to manly. I Didn't want to grow any more chest hair! Plus I can sit back and relax and count all the stalls the manuals have on the rocks.
 
I know its.not a JK but I want to tell my opinion about manual.vs auto transmissions.
I have th400 in my cj and t150 in my other cj.i think its.true that you have more control of.the vehicle with the manual.i love to get out of the mud with the t150 because t150 has its first and reverse gears in vertical so it gives great momentum and saves the day :)
I wheeled with th400 for years ..now it has lots.of.cracks.around.the body ..always.leaking..we dont have crawling areas around here so i haave always liked manual.I got bored with th400 now ..i am looking for a nv4500 for.sticky mud and deeper snow :D

I love driving stick, but after having a manual car for a few years, my daily commute started to make it annoying. My Jeep is now auto due to that, and I wouldn't want my girl friend to grind my gears... (pun intended) :cool:

The shift/tap tronic transmission as mentioned before is also a very cool feature. I definitely use it quite a bit when I pass cars, and take my Jeep off the pavement.

I know all about the tap shift. My GTI has a dual clutch with paddle shifters... It still leaves me wanting a clutch pedal though.

It's going to be an interesting and long drive home! :crazyeyes:
