Gobicon

In the back of my mind, I was thinking the easiest way to get the high mount LA rear mounts to work would be to leave the rock stars in place, cut off the front section of the Rockstar to weld in the control arm mount leaving the shock mount section in the correct position. Then weld in plates to blend the skid front to back. Not sure if that is possible, just how I rationalized it in my head.

He tried that first.

Bubba is saying the only way the original mounts, i installed with the high clearance LA, could have worked was to raise the top mount by cutting into the tub. But what you described is kind of what Bubba did but without the luxury of having the original control arm brackets to work off of.

This is what i originally did, you can kind of see what part was part of a rock star skid

And this is what the bolt on CO with the DD long arm on the same axle is supposed to look like

You can see that i had a lot more clearance but it was made work with the Fox shocks that i had.

Looks great! So basically, the only reason to run the high clearance is if you are going to be running the lever system?

You do have to have the high clearance arms to make the lever work. However, it’s not the only reason to run them. The high clearance arms are beneficial in that they won’t get hung up on rocks as much as the normal DD long arms set up would. In Benito’s case, he’s running the high clear arms with regular bolt on coilovers. A lot of jeepers end up going that route as well.

The high clearance arm kit provides more clearance on the frame side, and I’ve seen people get hung up there than on the axle side.

It can work with the regular shocks or the bolt on coilover kit, it just takes a little more cutting, grinding, and welding. If you have the skills to do it yourself or don’t mind paying a shop a little extra to make it work, it’s definitely the way to go.

I thought you had to have the high clear arms for the lever no?

I believe, if you upgrade to the lever at some point, all you have to do to the axle is take off the RockStars, cut the track bar bracket off, install the trackbar bracket that comes with the lever kit, and all the tabs to link the axle to the levers and the new swaybar tabs.

Ohhhhh ok. I didn’t even think about clearance on the frame side. I kept seeing this kit, and having to almost add shock mounts on the axle that just dropped right back down anyways.

I have never seen a Jeep get hung up on a rear shock mount, but i have seen a few get hung up on the rear LCA frame mount.

Highsteer Installed

Went on two wheeling trips with some members and continued to see the downfalls of the tierod and ram mount location on the PR60 in the Hardcore axle set, i had also made arrangements with Exodus Jeeps to do a custom skid for the ram.

During the first wheeling trip, and it wasn't the first time it happened, I am pretty sure I rubbed the ram on a rock causing the clamp attaching the ram to the tierod to twist upwards and slide over which prevented me from steering and gave me hell trying to get up an obstacle.

During this trip i also saw Mike_JK_Houston_711s custom skid plate he had made bend inward and make contact with the tierod and also showed the down fall of just having a skid made under the ram where it was located, the skid was below the axle tube and reduced clearance even more. I didn't like it, i called Exodus Jeeps and asked him to order parts to do the Evo Highsteer!

I believe it was a good thing that clamp would twist on the tierod, if not I think it could have caused damage to the ram rather than just moving it out of the way. In preparation for our next outing i had some bugger welds placed on both sides of the ram so that the clamp could still rotate if needed but keep it from sliding over. This worked but i also made the tierod frown during the second trip, i was glad i had the highsteer parts ordered and an appointment to get them installed!

I picked up the jeep this past weekend and the set up looks fantastic! I really doubt i can hit the tierod where it's at and the Ram is protected by 1/4" plate which seems to be made of a higher grade steel
