Flat Fenders

HOW DO YOU KNOW?!?!??!?! :bleh:

I'll have to see if I can find pics

Oh really? So if a Bushwacker gets caught like you did in the heartland video, you think it will just tear away cleanly without tweaking the fender? If that's the case then I don't need to worry.

Truth be told, they wouldn't tear away as cleanly as would be the case with factory fenders but, better than anything else out there. The factory fenders just snap in place and are really good about tearing away. Being that the Bushwackers are still screwed in, you can still do some minor body damage if hit just right.

Thats what I suspect as well. So, time to bring out the honey bottle, slam my skull against my toolbox and hope something useful comes out. Backyard engineering FTW. :D

maybe if you find a way to clip the bushwhackers to the substructur like you mentioned before.

Thats what Im looking to do. Attach the flare itself to the substructure using something (clips or plastic screws) that would "fail" and break away if hit hard enough.:thumb:

the look I was thinking of could actually be accomplished by trimming the side of the stock fender flare while preserving where it comes down the front of the Jeep to the bumper.I have a feeling it probably wouldn't look that good since every trimmed stock flare that I've seen either as the front entirely removed, or is trimmed at an angle.

There is a company I'm checking out for front and rear bumper. They are called Ace Engineering and Fab out of Michigan. Well, guess what I just found on their site?

Let me know what you think
Thanks for the input Wayalifers! You guys rock!

My only concern with using metal fenders is if by some unforseen circumstance you happen to slide into something solid you are going to do body damage. A buddy was wheeling and slide slightly into a tree with the factory tail light cages and crumpled his rear quarter panel. He has since taken the cages off and put armor on.

Those are quite spendy for what you get. I am going to eventually cut my stock flares.

Yup, I see it happen all the time and regardless of who makes them. Even hard plastic flares like what Xenon makes will do body damage. Again, if there were something better out there, I would be running it. Fact of the matter is, trimmed factory fenders are the best and that's why I run them - plus, they're FREE!! :yup:

The newer versions of the psc flares have a substructure that the flare bolts onto. Ill report how they hold up. New set of the front narrow versions sitting in the garage powdercoated and ready to install. Once my new head gets installed ill deal with the flares. I doubt I will ever even contact them though. Haven't torn off a stock flare yet. Not really any chance of sliding into anything. My tires are gonna contact well before the flare even comes close. There's over 12" of space between the flare and outside of the tire. Basically my entire rubber will be outside of the flare. Pretty much zero coverage lol. The only way I see em hitting is if I flop. Time will tell for my setup.
They seem to hold a jeep on em.

Here's the substructure bracketry.

Sorry, not impressed and nothing really new. The substructure still has to bolt up to something and when hit hard enough, that something will give. Of course if you're not hitting your fenders on the trails you play on now, you probably don't have anything to worry about. Me, I run wide PR60s with 15.50 wide tires mounted on wheels with 3.5" of back spacing and still manage to tear off my fenders. For the malls I play at, I'll stick with FREE and functional.

Yeah that's crazy. I'm on full width with 3.5 bs slabs and 12.5" wide tires. Scraped some branches up front. If I had rear flares they would have been torn off a few times. I'm only gonna be running em up front. We'll see how it goes. I'm not gonna run out and fix every little dent and scratch I get anyhow.

Wasn't trying to impress anyone. Making sure others are aware of the improvements they have made to their product. If you hit anything hard enough it's gonna give.

Really? My rears typically do ok. It's my fronts that have been seeing a lot of abuse even with 15.50" wide tires. I guess I must be doing something wrong.

Again, if hitting your fenders hasn't already been a concern of yours, it probably never will be :yup:

Wasn't saying you were trying to impress anyone, just that I wasn't impressed with what I saw.

A plastic factory flare that gets hit hard enough simply tears off - there is nothing to give. Trust me, I do it all the time :)

Lmao. Hopefully the narrow flare gives me the extra clearance in the tight spots. Ill def have the looks going for me:rock: next up arb fridge and dtd

keeping the stock flares seems to make the most sense to me. Free, and functional. Plus I could trim them to get pretty close to the look I'm after.

Like I said, if there were a better solution out there, I would be running them now regardless of how much they cost. In addition to being FREE and functional, the best part about trimming your factory fenders is that you can cut them anyway you like. :yup:

Best possible scenario for any mod. Thanks for steering me peeps!:thumb:

Well I have been convinced (which didn't take much LOL)
Once I get feeling better I am gonna cut my factory flares.......... but since mine are painted I will definitely be taking my time doing it;)

And then to the bumpers
