Same thing happened to me before too. I now know my 3.8L engine burns about 1 qt. of oil per 1000 miles. I now refill about 1 qt. in between my regular oil changes and I never get too low. Oil maintenance is certainly not something to slack on with 1st generation JK engines.

I only have 3560 on full synthetic, so I will just add 1 quart, correct?

I can't really tell from your dipstick but one quart should hold you over until your next change. Synthetic or not, these things will burn it all the same. I use synthetic and I still have to get an oil change every 3000 miles with a fill-up in between. It's certainly tedious but as long as it keeps my baby running well I don't mind.

Ok thanks.
I'm buying 2 or 3 just in case.
Can I mix oils or do I have to use the same one

I wouldn't make a habit of mixing them, but it definitely shouldn't do any harm. I would argue that, keeping your oil properly filled and your engine properly lubed is much more important. I change mine from synthetic to regular sometimes and I've even tested out different viscosities once or twice.

Thanks brotha!!!

I was told never to switch back from synth to regular but I did in the wife's car and it runs great!

Anytime bro! I'm certainly no oil expert, but that seemed to be the consensus when I asked a bunch of questions about my engine eating oil. Letting it get too low is very dangerous. It can definitely be a pain in the butt to have to refill in between changes, but it seems to be par for the course with these 3.8L's. As long as my engine keeps running like a top, a little preventative maintenance doesn't scare me a bit!

I usually use full synthetic, but my shop accidentally used regular on my last change. It's been about 2 months and I haven't felt any difference at all. I would love to have someone out there with a bit more knowledge on the subject to chime in! I'm curious now.

Realistically, I just couldn't justify spending the extra money on full synthetic when I was forced to change my oil every 3000 miles anyway due to my 3.8's consumption. If there is any substantial benefit to running synthetic, other than getting extra mileage in between changes, I'd love to hear it.

Would it be wise for me to go back to synthetic or keep running regular?

Either way, I'm doing full changes every 3k.

you really shouldnt mess with different viscositys and weights, basically the crank, connecting rod, and cam bearings have a certain amount of space and thats how they determine what type of oil to run IE 5w-30, you can run a 5W- anything and not damage an engine rated for 5 weight ( the 30 or 20 or whatever is the rating of temp that the oil breaks down) but if you go thicker you could starve your bearings of oil and thinner as well. also if you mix up to one quart of non synth with synth oil you lose all the synthetic benefits, but as Hack12 said its better to have enough oil even mixed then not enough oil! also synthetic oil soaks into the metals reducing wear on the moving parts and can free up to 8 hp on some engines. hope this helps!

Awesome! Thanks for all that information. Exactly what I was looking for. I'll definitely be going back to synthetic after the regular goof on my last change. Would you suggest sticking with 5W-20, as recommended by the factory, or jumping to a 5W-30, as some on here have suggested?

well 5w-30 will not harm your engine but if you are always running it a little warmer then yeah 5w-30 would be a suggested change! and i recommend mobil 1 full synthetic its all i use. if you have any more questions feel free to ask and if i dont know the answer ill hunt it down for you! :thumb:

Okay, thanks. I don't think I run warm. My temperature needle is always dead center between hot and cold. I suppose I'll stick with the 5W-20 synthetic. Just wish I could get the full 5-6k miles out of it like most other vehicles. However, more frequent changes is a small price to pay when you have the priviledge of owning the best vehicle on the planet!
