Long before covid there was reported evidence that elite athletes are more susceptible to developing myocarditis than the general population. There are medical studies and papers on this very topic. Without going into the weeds too much, it has to do with how hard they stress their bodies and the absence of sufficient downtime, which then allows viruses and bacteria (that might not be a big deal for other people) to attack their hearts.
The good news is that the myocarditis is not typically permanent. But, sometimes it is and that sucks (whether the myocarditis was caused by something as well-known as covid or by something as seemingly benign as a tick bite).
I would be remiss if I didn’t also point out that anabolic agents, diuretics, and other sports “doping” practices also significantly increase the risk of myocarditis.
I’m not trying to minimize the health impact of covid on some people, but I think it’s important that discussions present the facts in proper context.
I also think it’s important to recognize the substantial negative impact on the quality of the lives of tens of millions of Americans who have been forced below the poverty line because of this mess. That’s a generational impact.
Pontificating about which path is worse is an exercise probably best done over a nice whiskey.
