Which half ton pickup should I buy?

Was hoping to get some input on this as I’m considering switching the Miata out for a used truck to daily - obviously in the interest of space, ability to haul dirt bikes and whatnot, non-wheeling road trips, and maybe even towing the Jeep or jet skis if need be.

Not too concerned on efficiency but as a commuter primarily it would help - so I’d like to hear your experiences with maybe Ecoboost/V8 Fords, Hemi/EcoDiesel Rams, or V8/Duramax GM products.

On top of efficiency and capability, your experience in your given truck’s reliability would be greatly appreciated as well - I’d plan to keep a truck for a while.

Any notable midsize trucks would be helpful as well, but I’d prefer a half ton for sure.

Really hard to say these days... for every 5 guys that says a truck is great... 5 more say they have nothing but problems. I would stay away from diesel for what you need it for. A 5 year old Ford or Chevy 1/2 ton is probably a solid choice. My 2018 F150 with the 2.7 has been great. Oil, brakes and Tires is all I've had to do to it in about 80k miles. Mileage is good... comfortable to drive. At the time I hated the styling on the Chevy... the newer one is growing on me though. The interior/dash on the Chevy looked overdone to me at the time. I liked the simplicity of the F150... more old school. Just do some solid research on the engine you plan on getting... I heard GM is having huge problems with their 6.2l right now.

Have liked the Fords I’ve driven, thanks for the input Kirk!

None.
Don’t buy a thing. Sell the dirt bikes, jet ski’s, jeep. Daily drive whatever you have now.
Graduate, get off probation. See where your at, at that time and start looking into it then. Debt sucks. It sucks even worse if you’re in between jobs or on probation.
Wait
Best advice right here haha. Everything’s paid off and the Jet skis are my dad’s. That’s the plan - just been pondering the idea a lot lately as this is for the longer term.

I wouldn’t get anything new right now. Nissans and Toyotas are junk, GM has its issues but it’s the same lifter and transmission issues as the last 20 years. The 6.2 “issue” is being fixed. Eco boost has it cam phaser issues, and anything with a hemi is over priced IMO.

Midsize wise, they all suck imo.

Stick with the Miata and just enjoy it and the jeep. Used and new car prices will drop eventually and be better when you graduate and have a steady job with a department.

I’ve had them all literally! 3500’s, 2500’s and 1500’s. I’m driving a GMC Denali right now with the 3.0 diesel. It uses so much def it’s hard to keep it in it but gets crazy good fuel mileage. I hated the 2 fords I had the 10 speed in the 150’s feels like it’s always searching for gears and I hated it. I ruined an f250 because the aluminum body isn’t strong enough for washboard roads. The top of the doors literally flap into the cab of the truck. Ive had ram 1500’s and 3 mega cab Cummins and they are my favorite trucks out of them all. I will be trading my GMC in in February when I get back from Mexico for a new ram for sure. I honestly don’t consider a Toyota or Nissan a real truck haha, just a car with a bed. I’m a ram guy always have been and always will be. I have tried them all though multiple times! Interest rates are too high to buy anything right now though. If you don’t have cash keep what you have!

Same here had them all diesel and gas. My 2014 Ram 6.4 Is still going strong I will keep it until I die 🤣

Find you an old Ford 3/4 ton with a 7.0 turbo diesel.

Don't have to worry about any of the emissions. It's 26+ years old so it's already a beater, drive the snot out of it.

Oh, by the way, those old 7.0's can be "tuned" and you can get 30+ MPG all day long.

Agreed and it wouldn’t be new or even close to it. Thanks for the input!

Thanks Rick! I’ve always liked Ram too but definitely have zero need for a 3/4 ton.

Lol no Joel 😂
Well good, I'd say Toyota.
The guys i know that have DEF diesel trucks seem to always have issues, of the 25 Ford trucks client uses in the oil field, the 10 DEF trucks seem to always be in for repair; granted they work them hard but the previous non DEF diesels ran strong.
