Crap...just when he was about to cross the 250 mile mark the leader board changed from showing them at 250 miles to 500 miles.

I think he is the only one in his class.

Right, but the race-dezert site has a leader board that was showing the individual times at the 250 mile mark until it switched to the 500 mile mark. The last number I saw was 90.

reconciling the the race map with Google earth, it looks like the run from Pit 8 just past mile 280 all the way to just before mile 305, is some seriously mountainous terrain. Not that any of it is easy, but that section looks pretty harsh. I'd expect a lot slower travel through there.
