Trip to Visit the Sis

Every year about this time, Cindy and I head out to the middle of Nevada and spend some time visiting my sister and her husband and out at their ranch. This is a place that his grandfather owned long before there was a paved highway and the history is really rich here. Unfortunately, accommodations in the area are limited and so, we decided to take our travel trailer to make our stay more comfortable and that means, we didn't take a Jeep with us. That said, here are a few pics from our trip and to show just how lovely it is out there

As is the case with just about any trip we take out across the Loneliest Highway, a stop over at one of our favorite saloons is always a must. Cheers from Middlegate Station!

Being so close to the Fallon Naval Air Station also known as Top Gun, there are all kinds of cool patches and pics in the restroom but this is one that always catches my eye. If you look closely, this is a shot taken above Middlegate and you can see the saloon and other structures on the ground below.

Here we are just after arriving at the ranch and being greeted by Basha.

Home for the next few days and right next to the original brick home.

If you can believe it, this thing was built back in the 1860s.
20240608100938-64157ce6.jpg

Yeah, I think I could get used to this.

Some other shots from around the original homestead.

The old blacksmith shop.

I would love to have this old buckboard.

The original one room school house.

And you know we did a lot of this while there.

CHEERS!
20240608101559-fbf26723.jpg

What's really cool about this place is that the original 1845 Fremont Trail passes right through it and across the front of the old home and you can see it here running along the fence line.
20240608101630-6e1943c1.jpg

Of course, you know we had to take a few hikes along the trail or at least, as far as we could go on the property. Here you can see my brother in law along with Pepper, Basha and Ripley.
20240608101040-80d2b74e.jpg

It was nice that there were so many flowers still in bloom.

On this 250 acre ranch, there are at least 7 springs and even more artesian wells and so there's water everywhere.

The bigger ponds are big enough that you can paddle a boat on them.
20240608101054-e56debf5.jpg

And they're full of big fish too.
20240608101101-236d6554.jpg

What was really cool is that there are sheep on the property and we got a chance to expose Ripley to them.

While she had no fear of the sheep, she also wasn't all that interested in them but holy cow, she could get them moving with just a look of an eye. This as opposed to the pyrenees who could just walk in and hang out amongst them LOL. In the end, Ripley just wanted to play frisbee or hang out with us in the cool shade.

Being so close to some great saloons, you know we had to spend a little time at another one of our favorites - the Lucky Spur.

Because all good things must come to an end, we had to say our goodbyes and head for home. It was sad to have to leave and worse, to lose the tread on one of the trailer tires.
20240608101529-f7ef018f.jpg

While it wasn't a blowout, the hanging tread ended up trashing the fender liner and even did some damage inside the trailer. But, I was able to get the spare on and we were back on the highway in no time at all.

To a well needed trip to visit the sis and to enjoy ourselves at their ranch, CHEERS from the Cold Springs Saloon.

I know it isn't much and certainly, there's no Jeep in the pics but I hope you enjoyed seeing the pics just the same

Great pictures! Looked like a nice time out seeing family. Bummer about the trailer tire - we've had the same thing happen to the jet-ski trailer on the way out to Lake Powell one year. Luckily we had the right tools to get back on the road in no time.

wow, what a beautiful view.

The 1860 house still standing is pretty impressive, could you tell what type of fish were in the ponds?

Sucks how much damage inside the trailer can happen when a tire loses its tread, hopefully you didn't get too much damage.

Ripley needs more sheep training lol
