While not developed by the guys at Jeep, this new heads up display designed by Land Rover is pretty badass. It essentially utilizes a pair of cameras mounted on the grille and projects an image of what would otherwise be blocked by your hood onto your window. Check it out...

Here's a couple of diagrams that help to illustrate how it works and what you will see...

Seems like a pretty nice idea! Better than an image to a console screen, don't have to take eyes off your line. And I guess this also answers the question of is the new LR Discovery gonna cost a lot... YES.

this is cool! doesnt land rover already have something similar to this where is shows it on the GPS screen? if not i may have seen it as a concept from an old concept they had on Top Gear UK

That is cool. Though I bet I'd still hit my tie-rod and get my diff hung up.

Well, I for one LOVE it but, it would really suck to have to replace your windshield.

That is pretty cool.

I wheeled with a guy in a newer fj a few years ago, we were trying to spot him up an obstacle, and he kept looking down instead of at us, we couldn't figure out why, until later we found out he had a camera at each front tire with displays in the center console. he didn't need our help :D

In all fairness, I would still want a spotter as they can see things you could never see from inside with cameras. But, having something like this would help you to keep your eyes forward and help you to understand what you're being told. :yup:

Why? The windshield is nothing more than a "screen." HU displays are usually projected from a tiny projector somewhere on the dash. Im sure the windshield is a bit more expensive since it probably has some kind of coating on it, but I doubt the technology is actually in the windshield...that would be pretty stupid actually.

And that was my assumption, that in some way, the windshield would have to be made with some kind of proprietary coating to make it work well and typically, things like that make replacing it a lot more expensive. Of course, I could be wrong - I admit that I'm not some kind of windshield technology expert.

BTW - you ever price out a 2012-up windshield vs. an standard 2007-11?

If it does take a special windshield, that would really suck to get a rock chip

And a rollcage dash bar would probably cause interference with the HU display :(

The Land Rover Evoque has pretty cool cameras on it. Good bridge technology until this Transparent Hood Display comes out! I think they show it around time :28
