Had some time to get the new speakers installed. I have to say after listening to some of the complaints on the install videos on YouTube, I was expecting a much bigger task then this turned out to be. If it took me an hour I'd be surprised. These things are literally plug and play.
Here are a couple of front and back comparison shots of the OEM (non-Alpine) speakers versus the new Kicker speakers. There really isn't a comparison.
A lot of people have noted the size of the magnet and the weight of the Kicker speakers so I thought I would weigh them and see the difference.
I decided to use Polyfill on the sound bar. I have no way to determine if it actually makes a difference, but for under $4 I figure it wouldn't hurt.
Shot of the Kicker speakers installed. I removed the sound bar to do this, but it could be done with it in place. It was just hot in my garage so I decided to do it inside.
At this point I moved to the garage and knocked out the front 4 speakers. It was hot so I didn't take the time to take pictures. I will say that you absolutely do not have to remove the whole dash to get the speaker boxes out.
In the garage they sound fantastic, but the real test will come tomorrow on my commute when I listen to music with no top at 70+mph.
I doubt this is much, if any, of an upgrade to the Alpine speaker system, but if you have the base model speakers it is probably worth it.
I'll decided later if I want to add a powered sub.
