The building of Bison

It looks like I get to battle the EVAP system. Replacing the gas cap has not helped. What’s the best place to target? The EVAP module or just replace the entire canister?

More times than not, the leak is at the small white box attached to the back of the EVAP. Remove it and check the gasket for cracks. Depending on the year of your Jeep, it may not even have one. Applying some RTV here in either situation will help to seal things up. I would start there.

You better do better than that as the excuse. Everybody knows Bill doesn’t “forget” to do something. Now Jeff on the other hand, he may conveniently have forgotten to tighten a drain plug or something while helping Bill. Lol.
 
What’s the code? P0456? I would start with the purge valve (white canister on back of the evap). If that doesn’t work let me know and I’ll tell you what to do next. Literally was dealing with that code for three years and spent thousands trying to figure it out.

Yeah, I have been watching in fear of what you have gone through, at least we don't have smog checks here in Michigan. I'll start with the purge valve and hopefully that solves it.

I ended up putting a new EVAP Module in and was able to clear the Engine light. I've run two tanks of fuel thru it an it hasn't come back on. But the permanent code and the GASCAP display is still showing up on the dash. How long does it take for that permanent code to clear? Is there a reader that will clear a permanent code?

If that cleared the code and keeps it clear, the permanent code should clear out after a set amount of miles. At least, that's what I recall.

We ran into the same thing with our JK. A PERMANENT small EVAP code just wouldn't clear even after we fixed it. Ultimately, disconnecting the battery is what we had to do. Working in the automotive industry, this is the first vehicle I can recall where I had to do that. Normally the scanner will clear it.

Yup, disconnecting the battery for about 15 min should do the trick too :)
