Everyone has a breaking point and this guy reached his. Dudes in this line of work are under incredible levels of stress- for years, and not just during times of war. The stress is a continuous part of the job and guys cope differently. Studies have shown actual changes to the physical structure of the brain from continual elevated levels of stress hormones which are often exacerbated by things like lack of sleep, chronic pain, explosive caused overpressure injuries, concussion, and loud noise. Typically the final breaking point is triggered by women or work, but not always. Alcohol and other substances can play a role in your breakdown, or it can be part of your stability and the way you survive. I’ve seen both. Most guys have a coping mechanism and it’s not standardized and often unorthodox.
I personally know several guys in this biz who have gone off the rails, some made major realignments in their lives, radically changed lifestyles/careers and came out stronger. Some took a ‘timeout’, figured shit out and came back to the job good to go. Some killed themselves. Sometimes it’s not a surprise when they take their lives but often it is and nobody in their circle of family, friends or associates suspected they were that close to the edge. The vast majority of the guys aren’t the touchy-feely sharing types so what is inside is not known.
From what I have heard, the breaking point for this guy fell into the ‘woman category’. Some of it has already leaked out and the rest of the info may follow, or not.
The overwhelming majority of the time when guys like this go off the rails it’s not this overt and public so it’s easily covered up and the general population never knows, but in some very rare cases it’s very obvious and not possible to conceal.
