When I was working at McDonnel-Douglas, the Democrats led by Diane Feinstein decided they were gonna shut down the “military industrial complex”. That meant the loss of thousands of aerospace jobs at the Long Beach, California site alone.Union? A lot of those dudes still believe the complete bullshit lies about the dems ‘protecting’ the working man….
We took this to our union and were told “We support this. Don’t worry about your jobs. Everyone will be retrained and given work building buses and light rail for public transportation.”
At that point, I’d invested 15 years in a career as a structures technician working on high performance aircraft, some military and some civilian. I had no interest in building buses or trains. UAW 148 told me too bad. This is the future. All the way up to the day McDonnell-Douglas laid everyone off and shut down the Long Beach plant. By that time, the union leaders already collected their pensions and left.
Most were given retraining through the California unemployment office to get a “C+ certificate” and pushed out the door with a smile and a wave to look for work as under qualified computer techs in a flooded market. No one offered anyone the promised job of building buses and light rail.
The UAW never wavered in their support of Diane Feinstein, Maxine Waters and their ilk.
