I buy beef directly from a butcher and don't pay that.

We've quit buying beef from any place other than a local butcher shop as well because of the pricing at Costco nowadays.
But, playing devils advocate - go to a restaurant and get a steak that size & quality - you're gonna end up paying double/triple that easy.

I rarely get steak at restaurants because of the crazy price and they usually don’t get cooked right… then I’m pissed. Lol

It really is a tough thing. There are a couple of steak houses that I really enjoy but always find it hard not to think, for the price, I could easily get a Costco pack of 4 for the same price and I can cook it just as well if not better.

The only time I'll buy steak at the store (a trusted grocery store) is in the manager's clearance section. Meat needs to be sold by the following day and they mark it down to crazy low prices. Put it in the freezer at home.

As far as restaurant, I can cook it at home better and cheaper in my opinion. My wife's opinion too. She'd rather have it at home than a restaurant.

Same. We actually found a family that raises miniature Hereford cattle (still weigh around 900 lbs) on grass only and we buy a steer from them and have it butchered. No idea what it would cost in a store but the flavor beats any store or restaurant around. Never fed grain never given antibiotics just pure grass fed and finished. We get the bones and make bone broth and the excess fat is rendered into tallow for cooking. Organs go to dog though.

TBH, we rarely eat out at restaurants other than the local bars, diners & mexican joints any more. And even there you're spending $50-75 easy with a drink or 2. It adds up really quick, and we've really cut back. I also have a hard time paying these restaurant prices nowadays for just a regular meal.

A lot of “butcher shops” are just buying meat wholesale. Not any different than Costco gets.

Very true. It's hard to find a good one - usually need to get to a rural area but even then you have to ask. Since my neighbor gave up raising cattle I had to find someone. Turns out the place that did the butchering of his cows does everything in-house - they raise their own feed and control 100% of the process from birth to butchering.

Same. Somewhere along the lines most restaurants I can afford just started selling microwaved frozen stuff pieced together into a meal. Slightly better than store bought frozen entrees but still obviously frozen and microwaved. I'm not paying $50 bucks for a frozen meal. I mean I usually enjoy the freeze dried backpacking meals that I take on overnight hikes more. Brands like Pinnacle Foods, Peak Refuel and even Mountain House has recently upped their game. I find the first two to be better than restaurant quality. And I'm usually eating while my dog and I are listening to the sounds of the forest while watching a sunset. And that meal only cost $12-$15 + a little sweat equity.

If you have a difficult time paying for even a regular meal, have you checked if the government has a plan to help you?
