RS9000xl vs Evo Spec King 2.0 vs Evo Spec 2.5

So out of curiosity if the 7000s will dissipate heat better than the 9000s, how do the 7000s stack up against the king 2.0s? I really want to buy some Kings but I'm not entierly convinced I need the 2.5s and resi. So if the 7000s are pretty similar to the King 2.0s (minus the evo valving) then I might as well just run those. I definitely would like the ability to maintain some speed on dirt roads without my shocks being on fire but by no means will I be doing it often or for hours at a time.

K so I ended up talking to the guys at evo for a little bit about their kings, and just like many others have said here with the 2.5s and I'll quote them here "unless your cycling like a race car they are pointless on a JK" so pretty much sways my mind back to the 2.0s. Then I started asking why those are worth the $1100 over something like the Rancho 9000 or 7000 and it came down to 2 things. Obviously the 1st is their valving that has been tested for the JK. And the 2nd was the fact that they are rebuildable and tunable. The way he put it was some dudes like nike some dudes like rebook it's all subjective and with the Kings you have the ability to change it up for your taste. As mentioned before rebuilding the Kings cost about as much as a new Rancho so take that for what it's worth. If you have and like the Rancho then there really isn't too much of a reason to go with a king as he said something like the 2.0 and the 7000 will dissipate heat just the same.

Yep I’m running the 9000s now and they’ve been great but if I need to replace them I’ll be going with the 7000s

Sorry I missed your previous post, the crew over at ORE are spot on.
If I saw myself more in the desert type, I would run the 7000.

No worries at all I really appreciate your input to this thread, says a lot about you guys at Ranco!
As much as I would love to drop the coin on some Kings I think my phone convo with Evo makes me want to try out the Ranchos first and see if I like them. Because if I like them I don't see a huge advantage by going with the King 2.0. Now obviously ride is so subjective so who knows but seems dumb to me to drop the $1100 without first trying something cheaper and at least giving them a shot. I guess just time for me to choose between 7000 or 9000
Are the 9000s when set on the softer side going to be softer than the 7000? The ass end of my 2dr is pretty light trying to avoid too much of a bouncy rear end haha

Yes they are. Personally, I set my front to 4 and my rear to 6 for the highway but my rear is heavy so YMMV. Offroad I knock both front and rear down a couple notches for the rocks or just leave them alone if doing long dirt roads aired down. I'll crank the rear up a notch or two if I've got the seats in and rear passengers.
It took a lot of experimenting to find the right settings and every rig will be different.

So the 9000's at the lowest setting is super soft. For it to be close to the 7000's 7 or so.
I ran the 7000's for a while, I now run the 9000's at about a 6-7 (5 front 7 rear) these days.
I used to run a 3.... I am a bit heavy in the rear though!! HA!

Hello everyone, my apologies for resurrecting an old thread but I couldn't find enough info to decide between the Evo spec 2.0 vs the 2.5
This will be for my daily driver. Currently have 2" ome springs with Rancho 9000xl and I'm not happy with the ground clearance and especially the way it handles bumps in the road.
So I purchased evo 3" Plush ride coils and now need to decide on which evo spec shocks. My jk is a 14 unlimited auto with front bumper and winch, everything else is stock except tires. Can anyone speak for the king 2.0?

I think I'm ready for new shocks... So re-reading this thread I started back in 2018, I'm still unsure... As much as I really want King 2.0's I still can't justify the price. The 9000's have been fine but I think I want to try something different. Has anyone heard anything good about the new Rancho RS7MT Monotube Shocks? Are the Fox 2.0's a good option? I do tend to burn through the desert a bit especially on the NY runs.. (not racing or anything) What are a couple GOOD affordable options these days?

The only mono tube I have to compare is the bilstein 5100's vs king 2.5's. Driving fast the 5100's would get hot and fade away. The 2.5's can take the abuse of hammering through the desert. I think any mono tube will fade going fast through the desert. They just can't disapate heat the way a shock with a remote resi can. I love my 2.5's but probably wouldn't be running them if I didn't get such a good deal on a used set and had them rebuilt at EVO.

The MT’s are supposed to handle heat better than the 9000’s so I’m leaning that direction.. but like you said a resi shock will always be superior for that.
Another King (2.0 or 2.5) Con for me is possible rear damage which at that price is scary… My 9000 rear bodies are Hammered from the rocks, but I could care less. I was more upset when Highwaytrout F’d his up at the New Year Run. Lol
I think the awesome thing about Kings as stated above, is they are tune-able.. And 2.5’s are the ultimate for handling heat. They are Bad Ass shocks no doubt.
It's not just the heat, monotubes also have a floating piston that separate the nitrogen gas from the oil. This help to prevent cavitation and fade. While 9000's are nice and comfortable, I think the new 7000's are what I would recommend for how you're using your Jeep.

I’m a Rancho fanboy but the 9000’s just didn’t do it for me. I didn’t notice anything on different settings. The 7000’s were the ticket.

And “Comfortable” is subjective… I never noticed anything with the dial.. just turned them all the way up, all the way down… noticed no change.. then back up and never touched it again. And I’d rather prevent some fade like you said.. Thanks Eddie.
I think where you really feel the difference with 9000's is with really stiff springs. I run a set on Jane and have the fronts set to about 2 and the rears at zero. If I set them higher, she feels like her axles are mounted to the frame. With a set of soft coils, I personally feel that 5000's feel just as comfortable or at least, for around town driving. I do remember you saying this before.. and now agreed..
Also, aren’t the 9000 bodies larger in diameter.. this all started because yesterday I noticed my driver front shock has a lot of play between the shaft and the body. And it looks like the body of the shock is contacting the frame at full flex as the shock bodies are dented a bit on both the driver & passenger. Maybe not a big deal.. just something I noticed.
