Replacement key

Is the dealership the only place to get another key with fob? My jk only came with one key and I really would like a second to keep at the house in case my wife needs/wants to drive it. I'm scared to thing what one will cost.
 
You can program a new key yourself. You will have to look online because I can’t remember how the hell I did mine. It is one of those weird sequences where you put the main key in the ignition, lock the doors, unlock the doors, touch your nose, honk the horn 17 times and then drink a beer. I ended up getting a standard key (not the push button/remote start key) as another backup key.
 
I'll dig into that. If it involves drinking a beer I think I can get it done. Where did you find an unprogrammed key? Just get a blank cut from anywhere that sells them?
 
True value or OEM, I’ve had locksmith make a key and it stop working 3 months later so I made him come back for free. I have a True Value key made and it’s good quality and I’m on 2 years no problem.

From what I'm seeing on procedures for programming online everything says you have to have 2 working keys, if you only have one it takes a key programming machine. Now my first thought is just use the same key twice and then do the process for the replacement. Will the jeep know I'm trying to do this and go nuts, or the process just not work all together? Also, there's no step for the beer. I'm bothered by that but will just insert that step as necessary.
 
I'd check ACE 1st, the ACE near me has the keys and was able to program mine.
no charge if it didn't work but it's been working great for over 2 years now
 
Very interesting. I called local dealer to ask about programming a key I provided and it was $100. I'll definitely call ace and ask them.

Not all Ace's do it, you may have to call around. The one closest to me doesn't, but the next closest is in a hoity toity neighborhood and they do.
 
Talked to my local ace. A cut and program was something like $180. I still have to bring the blank. Trying to find out what the local dealership charges to cut and program. I know they charge $100 to program.
 
That's what I've read. I thought just trying the same key twice but don't want the jeep to freak out and think something was going on and shut down.
