Actually, you can buy and own an AR-15 style rifle in California. They may look a little different because the rifle has to be "featureless", but they are functionally not really much different (with the exception of the new detachable magazine issue.) I think the "featureless" laws are pretty stupid and, with every law they pass, the manufacturers come up with creative ways around the law. I have plenty of friends who lawfully own and shoot AR style weapons in California. The AR debate is really interesting to me on many levels. As far as I know, you can't carry one concealed for personal protection in any state in the country. I haven't really heard anyone argue that they need one on their person every day out in public...or ever out in public.

In Nevada, as a Nevada resident, it typically takes a few hours to walk out with a firearm (of any kind) after purchase. The wait is solely based on however long the federal background check takes. Sometimes the feds are backed up, sometimes they aren't. If you have a current CCW it takes about 20-30 minutes (sometimes less) to walk out with a weapon.

Can't carry concealed, but plenty of states have open carry law..

For example, Missouri, where this idiot, fully knowing what he was doing did this...

I haven’t had the opportunity to shoot a California compliant AR so I can’t really speak from experience as to whether they are different to shoot. That said, they obviously shoot the same rounds at the same firing rate as any other AR, with no less accuracy. (Which, by the way, is why I think the “featureless” laws are nothing but fluff to make the left wing feel good about themselves).

Honestly... the process of buying guns in CA doesn’t bother me much at all.. Probably because I’m a law abiding citizen that takes gun ownership seriously.. I take the tests, go through background checks, FFL if needed, waiting periods... No Problem! If thats what it takes to help keep guns out of the hands of criminals... I’m 100% good with it.

What fucking pisses me off is the CA gun Roster & CCW laws in los angeles. I do my part, follow the law, train when I can and am responsible with my firearms... yet I’m treated like a child. I can’t carry to protect my family especially when visiting rough neighborhoods (wifes family lives in Compton) and I can buy a gen 3 glock... but not a gen 5 or most new models of any firearm because they are not on the Roster. This is where I feel my rights are violated and these 2 laws in particular do nothing to keep society safer. It gets me furious just thinking about it... and why I get so defensive when politicians push for “More” gun control.

There are Rifle lengths and pistol lengths. Michigan is an open carry state but requires CPL to conceal. The 10” barrel pistol AR is required to be registered as a pistol just like normal handguns, and may be concealed or carried in a vehicle (with CPL) the same as other handguns. ATF has extremely strict rules of what can and can’t be classified as an AR pistol and what accessories turns it into a SBR which requires tax stamp. I don’t personally know anyone that actually carries one, but it would be legal to do so. You may not however conceal a rifle or carry a rifle/long gun in the vehicle (besides transport unloaded/locked/trunk obviously).

And for the rant section of the post as I see most of you actually are interested in having conversation vs fight. A hunting style rifle with a Wood stock is just as deadly as an AR. Any moderately experienced shooter can reload quickly, so imo “high capacity” arguments are just pointless. The style of grip or the ease of adding attachments for personalization doesn’t make it any more deadly then any other rifle, neither does the black paint. And AR 15 stands for Armalite Rifle 15 not assault rifle, when actual firearm owners enthusiasts etc hear the term “assault rifle” we roll our eyes and stop listening to you, one of the most fundamental reasons that this debate is stuck is that the anti gun crowd refuses to learn or understand anything about firearms and then try to tell the pro gun crowd what they can and can’t do.
The one and ONLY thing I believe that California has implemented that in my own opinion makes sense, is requiring a gun safe in households with minors. Quick access safes and gun vaults have existed for years and work great and keep things secure enough to prevent accidents and rides in backpacks. That is a reasonable middle ground, if it’s not on your person it’s secured, and it still has the same quick accessibility of a night stand drawer.
And I’ve read a few times throughout this thread and in memes how “just imagine all the people in a Walmart guns out looking for an active shooter” “it happened in Texas everyone’s carrying down their and it still didn’t stop him.”
Things that I carry are for my personal protection and the protection of the people around me. In no scenario will I be searching for a shooter walking around a Walmart with an ak wearing Kevlar with a .45 and a t shirt. Find cover, if engaged you then have the ability (and hopefully skill and training) to put up a fight, if not engaged you stay put and sheltered or flee if safe to do so.

Living in CA but not owning a gun I researched this last week. I post the steps for purchasing a gun and getting ccw in San Bernardino county. I knew it wasn't easy but I found it to be quite extensive. Also thanks for confirming you can no longer purchase an AR-15 in CA after June 2018.

Actually you can still purchase an AR in Ca. As long as it is Meets CA compliance standards. Many shops sell them.

I should clarify. AR-15 looking rifles can still be purchased. 10 round fixed magazine that can only be reloaded after you break the gun in half. No pistol grip, no collapsable stock, etc etc. A California compliant AR merely has a similar look.

Kind of. I think they’re losing the fines for carrying in places of worship or school zones. Something like that. The logic is that criminals don’t abide by the laws anyways, so by “allowing” you to carry there then it eliminates the gun free zone. I drive by a Baptist church every day and they have big ass signs up showing it’s prohibited to open or conceal carry. It’s actually the law here that they have to have signage if that’s what they wish. Dumbest shit ever. Seriously a big ass sign indicating a killing field for would be mass shooters.

Law here too. Private businesses have to display a similar sign if they don't want concealed carry on their property (excludes criminals of course).

Funny thing is, many years ago, The Denver Zoo tried that shit and people went nuts because it's a public place. Turned into a legal issue and of course The Zoo lost and couldn't post those signs. So now they have these big ass signs that say "No Weapons Allowed" with an image of a Ghostbusters strike through a hand gun, but then in really small print under that, it says "For details, see section xyz.lbgt.blah blah blah...." Well, if you actually take the time to look up that section (because every person who's taking their kids to the zoo is going to read that, and stop, and ask to see the zoo's weapons policy :crazyeyes: ), here's what you get:
