Re-gearing issues

I work at a shop and another fellow mechanic add i attempted to put in Some yukon 4.88 gears in. He has set up many axles in the past. We are both dumbfounded by when i let off the gas a horrific screech comes from the rear. Drive it a total of maybe 1/4 mile and took the cover off. The Oil was super hot and steaming. We rechecked all the bearings and back lash. the gears also looked very warn. And metal flakes in the new oil. The gears are new.

Did you use the pumpkin spreader? it gives a certain preload to the bearings, might be the issue?

No we did not use a pumpkin spreader. It is just a standard d44 from a sport, open diff, again he had done many and the front diff came out fine. He said tart he has never seen this. It has a nasty screeching when you let of the gas. Sounds like nails on a chalkboard

I might be wrong, but so far, all Dana differential need to be spreaded about .020"

Update: called Yukon and sent then some photos of the gears, they are sending me summer shipping info to send it back so they can check the hardness. But they said that they have never seen that happen before in such a short distance.

Damn! That is a nice pattern though..lol. This is just one more reason for me not to run Yukon. Im sure they make good stuff, I have just seen too many problems associated with them. Im sure this has happened to other companies as well. Its good that Yukon has never seen it either, they immediately owned up to there obviously being an issue with their parts. So props to them for that. OP hopefully it doesnt take long to get your rig back on the road.

I ordered a new set to get me back on the road asap. Of course since I'm in Maine they are in Washington, if i hadn't ordered another set it'd be a week shipping each way plus However long out takes them to inspect them... I don't exactly want the Jeep to be down for three weeks... unfortionetley they didn't expedite my shipping..

Update: got the new gears today. The old ones were definatley not hardened correctly. The color is clearly different from ether lack of hardening.

well time for an update today after driving home from work today uh front inside makes a noise rear did so it up on the front cover of and lo and behold look what I found.... I am so not impressed with Yukon gears right now
