Re-Gearing ‘18 JKU

I am hoping this Summer to Regear my Jeep to 4.88 with my 35’s. when I am looking at manufacturers like Revolution they always prompt add-ons. Opening this up to feedback as my other posts have said that I’ll only be doing a little off-roading compared to the massive amount of highway I do annually. I am 20,000kms since Sept 2024. Are eLockers really a necessary item to add onto my differentials when I do Regear?

Is there anything else, other than ring and pinion gears I should be looking at when I do pull the trigger. I have two mechanics able and ready to do the work for me.

Thanks again everyone.

A big part of re-gearing cost is labor and if you think there will ever be a time when you install lockers, it would make the most sense to do it at the same time. That said, it doesn't sound like it's something you'll be needing. If anything, I might consider running 4.56 being that you'll be spending so much time on the highway.

To be honest. I do not know what the purpose of eLockers do or are for. I understand if I was to do it cost would be the smartest use of my money would be when I do Regear.

For normal driving, your differential is open and that allows your wheels to rotate at different speeds. This is necessary as when you do things like turn your Jeep, one wheel will rotate faster than the other as they travel through different arcs. The problem is, off road and in conditions where one wheel has traction and the other does not, the later will spin and the one with traction will not. This will prevent you from moving. Lockers physically lock both wheels on your axle so that both wheels must turn together. So, even if one wheel is up in the air, the one that still has traction will turn and keep you moving. This is a huge advantage to have off road.

Thank you for the clear description, makes sense. In Jeep circles in the United States is there many offloaded who rock crawl or overland without eLockers and open differentials?

Honestly, if you don't know if you'll need lockers or not, I would say to save your money and not have them installed. For the most part, there really is no need for them. You almost have to go looking for a reason to use them and they're typically really hard trails that require much bigger tires. At least, now a days anyway.

Appreciate it!

I have other expenses on my Jeep, I would much rather put my money towards like my steering. I need Tie Rods, Drag Link and Stabilizer.

to piggy back off of this, the factory traction control is so good as is that lockers are not needed that often as mentioned. i very rarely used my lockers i had installed on my old JK. i just let the traction control do all the work

Outside of Nevada, there might be a lot of slippery mud. That is a case where lockers can help. Also, having lockers is extra insurance if going off-roading solo.

Right, because I've never wheeled my Jeep outside of Nevada and wouldn't have a clue as to what I'm talking about.

Even better insurance is not going off-roading solo.

So glad we had lockers here. Definitely made a world of difference (y)

100% agree with this. 4.56 gears will be a better choice with the 35's unless your planning on moving up to 37's in the near future. Then the 4.88 gears will wk well. As for the other Comment on the lockers being some good insurance. Spot on.
