Yes, and the fungus is attracted to dead and rotting wood. I am not sure if it kills trees, but if it is growing on the trunk of a tree, the tree is dead or it's days are numbered.

When I sprayed to kill it, the entire lawn started moving, it was pretty wild.
But I was too late, it killed the entire lawn.
