You are referring to definitions which imply knowledge of intent.

I am not seeing any conflict here.

If you shoot a wandering demented person (as my dad became), then you have likely committed a crime. The only defense would be if you had no reasonable way to know and you feared for the safety of yourself, your family, or your home.

The conflict is you may read but not for comprehension... nobody is talking about a lost or dementia person, the entire discussion has been about intruders, someone that has broken into your home uninvited, an intruder, not some random dementia (or lost) old person wondering the streets ringing/knocking on someone's door by accident.
