PLEASE HELP - advice needed - PSC flares issues

I hoping to get some direction/advice/etc...

I had my PSC crusher flares painted through a friend that is in the auto industry. The painter is a legit painter...with his own shop but he did the work on the side. I was very upfront from the beginning that I was NOT trying to save money - this was just to give someone I know the business. He charged me $550 for all 4 fenders and my wildboar grill. Again, I stressed to them that I just wanted a job well done and that I needed no kind of discount.

Well I get the fenders back and the look great. They have been on for two weeks and its starting to rust in multiple locations.....I have attached some pics for reference but there is rust on all fenders starting. I am a little dissapointed (not knowing much about paint ill admit) but he told me he was charging me a little more to make sure he rust protected them as much as possible. I know the PSC Steel flares can rust but man, after literally 10 days on they look like this. The rust is coming through the outside too, where the seem of the tube and the top of the fender meet (you can see the yellow discoloration).

My question, what to do. My first though is to take them off. Clean them really well (maybe with a tooth brush or something underneath....then undercoat them underneath and then rattle them chrysler white....that would be i guess the cheap option...then other option I would think is to take them to another shop, get them blasted to raw metal again and repeat (hopefully correct this time).

Any advice, thoughts, etc....on my options. Of course Im hoping there is a way I can just put some elbow greese into this a fix becuase I dont feel like spending another X amount to get them blasted and then another x amount to get them repainted.

Pleaes help - any advice?

I'm really dissapointed because I didnt go to this guy for any type of discount....money wasnt any issue I just wanted the best work possible done.

I would make the guy you paid to do the job, do the job!! It's obvious some crucial prep steps were not done.
 
When you live out in the rust belt, there's next to nothing you can do to prevent this from happening other than NOT drive your Jeep in the winter time. Looks like a lot of your problem is coming from under the fender - probably road spray. As you have mentioned, maybe the best thing you can do is clean things up as good as you can and then undercoat the bottom of the fenders. Looking at your bolts, I would clean everything there as well and use some antiseize before you reinstall to help prevent/reduce more rusting there.
 
Unfortunately, Poison Spyder left a gap between the tubing & top plate and its extremely hard to get a good coating on them so it doesn't rust. Looks like he needs to put on a thicker coat. I've even seen people weld that gap.



Edit: I will add that I took a can of Rustoleum Undercoating and sprayed it really think, focusing on the underside inner gap portion as much as possible. Seems to have worked & I don't have any rust issues like this anymore. But my fenders are black & a DIY paint job.

Wow definitely a bummer. If it were me, I would take these right back to the painter who initially did the work and have him correct the issue. If you paid full price, or even a little more from what you said to "prevent rust", I would definitely take these back to him. He can pay to have them blasted and repainted. But that's just me. Good luck with getting this fixed!

First - thanks to everyone who replied so far, I appreciate the feedback.

I did, very random - I saw him today while getting gas at a wawa....he came over and looked as he basically told me option 1 that i mentioned....i should clean them and this and that and then undercoat them...i just looked at him like, hey why dont you step-up and be a good person and fix the mess....but unforunately he didnt say that.
 
Poison Spyder says right in their instructions that you have to coat the crud out of the underside to stop rust. My opinion is that they are going to rust no matter what. I clean and touch up every spring.

Part of the problem is that they are poison spyder. I'm not knocking their work but they add a coating tithe metal that is ext to impossible to get off prior to painting. I have had both bumpers come off... I sent my fenders to a shop to be painted and parts peeled off twice for the before i eve got them( now they won't warrantee the work because of it ) I have read quite a few posts i other forums all talking about the same problem. I am around 1000 into coating and so far not one single part is done. I have now sent them to be blasted as sweating the metal, sanding, using degreaser has not worked.

All that being said their parts are beautiful !!

Thanks for the feedback and sorry for your issues too - i know its frustrating...I just talked to a guy who is a painter (friend of firiend and he is not in my area so he cant do work)...he gave me a few different options and said he acutally has painted these fenders before..he said the majority of the rust is coming from the gap (where th tube meets the underneath metal and where the water sits - which we all know).

He told me to clean the rust as best as possible with a scotch brite and vinegar water...from there he said you can try and use a krylon product like rust tough primer....spray multiple coats in that gap and underneath....and then when finished with that top off with chrysler white rattle paint.....he said you can also fill that gap after all is said and done with a caulk like sealant....with the goal of not having water get down into that gap and sit there...

He did say, blasting and repainting from beginning is ultimately the best thing to do but he said for an option that wouldn't be as costly - i could try the above....

he warned NOT to use rubberized undercoating but if you are going to do yourself use a krylon or rustoleum type of rust primer.

self etching primer

I have the PSC front bumper, and recently added the fenders. Somewhere along the way I picked up the tip to use self etching primer after "thoroughly degreasing" them, I did three coats of primer and three coats of paint. The bumper held up great through two winters other than where it picked up some rock rash, I sanded and repainted those areas when I installed the fenders. I have had no issues thus far, in the midwest, where we love to try to match the amount of snow forecast with the amount of salt applied to the road… It seems to me that maybe your guy was light on the prep work and light on the paint… :thinking::twocents:

My suggestion is to have them sand blasted then coat in POR-15 which can be used as a primer then paint again. Only one thing I have ever seen stop rust completely is POR-15. It's amazing.

POr-15 should be used on a surface that is already rusty for best results.

If you do a search you will find that you are right rusty surfaces are best. Although seasoned metal and sandblasted metals are a good surface for Por-15 as well. He would be fine with sandblasting then applying.
 
Por-15 is an awesome product. It also requires two different products before applying it....unless they changed it. Marine clean and metal ready, THEN it has to be topcoated if it is to be applied on the surface facing the sun due to it will chalk. I used a polyurethane. Best results I have ever had and would recommend is to have them...a powdercoating company...burn it off and powder coat it. Years ago I had a Superlift kit on my Bronco. They came yellow and I knew being in Nebraska it would not last long and also due to their poor coating application of their product at the time. I had it powder coated red...extended radius ares, drop down brackets, and coil springs (one coat for them). It lasted for years in Nebraska weather with no rust appearing. Highly recommend. It is a shame this has happened. It looks to be due to poor prep as well. You will always get a better product by spraying per commercial application as to a spray bomb. There are good products out there. I would have cleaned with a metal prep, self etch or epoxy primer, sealer, paint, clearcoat. With proper cleaning and/or sanding in between. Products such as suspension parts, bumpers, flares, sliders, skids I would powdercoat. Yeah, you might have to touch up, but majority of the product would stay in great shape for a long time. IMHO.:beer:

Yes just didn't feel the need to tell him extra stuff was needed as he doesn't actually do the work and a shop would know that.

Powder coating would be great but he would still get those rust stains.

Sorry I disagree. Some companies have dip tanks and or burn it off if done right then coated. Like I said in my post above. I had powdercoating applied, lived in Nebraska and in winter dealt with and drove in heavily salted roads for several years. No problem no rust. My Bronco's body had more on it.

I see it as this. Most manufacturers offer coatings. Their specialty is the product they make...not the coatings. Unless they farm it out...maybe or just done in house. Which is why I had a powdercoating company remove coating from manufacturer and apply new coating. You want powdercoating go to a company that specializes in it. Have you ever had anything powdercoated? Yes, it is expensive and I feel worth it.
 
Is this a show jeep? What are your plans when they get scratched up from off roading? This just seems like a lot of money you have already wasted and probably going to waste more.
